History of Music - Part I

Ancient and Pre-historic Music

When you have no words to tell your feelings, silence is the best way to express it. But sometimes when silence fails to do its work, we take refuge to music. To quote Aldous Huxley After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Music has the magical powers to tell the world your thoughts and feelings. It is the best creation of the Gods' best creation (man). A song floating from any distant place would fill your heart with sudden joy and remove your sadness. There are different kinds of music to describe the different kinds of moods.

But what made man to create this rhythm or what is the source of his inspiration and creation? To answer this question we have to travel thousands of years back, when man was nomadic or was not fully civilized. It might be that long-long ago man was enticed by the natural beauty and sounds. The chirping of birds, the quivering of the lissome rivers or the gushing wind must have created some ripples in his heart and led him to produce this melody. So we can say that nature taught man to give birth rhythm. Every object of nature is steeped in music. Man learned to create music against the natural backdrop of sound. The music produced by the animals and birds in the form of sound which use to communicate, taught them to make this melodious discovery. Music is found in every culture and society, both past and present. However there is gulf of differences in their type and style.

Scientists believe that the modern human beings have emerged from Africa some 160,000 years ago. Around 50,000 years ago, they began to disperse to all the habitable continents around the world. As music is traced in all the cultures, including the most isolated groups of people, so scientists hold the view that music must have existed even before the dispersal of human beings. Thus it has been concluded that the first music must have originated in Africa. Some evolutionary biologists hold the view that the ability to recognize the sound not created by human beings as musical gives them a selective advantage. Prehistoric music or also once called as primitive music, is the name given to all kinds of music in the prehistoric culture. The prehistoric era ends with the development of writing and so with that, ends the prehistoric music.

The oldest known song was written in cuneiform in harmonies of thirds using Pythagorean tuning of the diatonic scale, about 4000 years ago from Ur. It was deciphered by Prof. Daffkorn Kilmer. At that era double pipes, bagpipes, double flutes were most prevalent. In Indus Valley Civilization, however, seven holed flutes as well as uses of string instruments prove that music was well cultured art in ancient period.

All these information clearly present the idea that, from the very beginning of human civilization and even before that, music was a great companion in the struggles for existence. The buoyancy of music relieved wretched prehistoric people from their grief, sorrows, fear and loneliness. It is those feelings which led man to explore more and more into the fields of music.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Cuban Salsa

Dance has been an important part of rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of human civilisation. In the beginning, before we had written language to record things, the purpose of dance was often to tell stories and to pass them down to future generations.

The story of dancing in Cuba

In Cuba, as in ancient times, dance tells its own story. The passion and energy of Cuban dance reveals the strength and conviction of the Cuban people, determined to enjoy life despite 'la lucha' (the struggle) of living in a strictly regulated country where the average monthly wage comes in at around 400 pesos - less than 10.

The richness of Cuban music and dancing also tells the story of Cuba's melting pot of cultures. From the high-stepping flamenco brought by the Spanish settlers in the 15th century to the frenzied tribal dances of the West African slaves, dancing is in the blood of the Cuban people.

From the teenage girl in denim shorts to the cigar-seller on the street corner, Cubans are given to break into spontaneous dance steps. Furthermore, the people dancing on the streets of Havana are likely to be just as good as the professionals, because in Cuba dancing is simply a way of life.

The variety of Cuban dances

Cuba boasts a huge range of dances including classical ballet, contemporary, flamenco and folk dancing. But it is the partnered routines that appeared in Havana dancehalls between the 1920s and the 1950s - Salsa, rumba, mambo and cha-cha-cha - that can be seen in every Cuban bar, club and street. Of these, Salsa is the most popular dance internationally.

Since the name 'Salsa' (it's Spanish for 'sauce') was coined, Salsa dancing has exploded in popularity in Latin America and across the world. Salsa dancing classes are now hugely popular but to really get into the swing of it a Salsa holiday in Cuba itself is a must.

Tips for Cuban Salsa dancing

If you do take yourself on a Cuban holiday, you'll have the unique experience of watching Cubans Salsa dancing. It sometimes appears that by some genetic aberration they have been born with super flexible joints, defying physics to carry out all the complex manoeuvres they have integrated into the dancing. Their remarkable twisting body movements and natural sense of rhythm will dazzle you.

If you have the right technique, Cuban Salsa is easier to learn than many other forms of dance. The basic footwork is a fairly simple walking motion, pausing every fourth beat, and there are some six basic steps you can follow to make sure you're on the right tracks.

1 Relax

To dance Cuban Salsa well it is important not to rush, but to relax into the steps. Movements should be precise and deliberate in addition to being flowing and smooth.

2 Walk with purpose

Salsa dancing involves a continual circular motion. Couples walk around each other with an imaginary axis between them. This makes turns look smooth and effortless. Walking gives time to untangle your arms after each turn.

3 Have confidence in your lead

The leader (usually the man) should have constant tension in his arms, while his hands guide his Salsa dancing partner around the floor. There is no need to clamp onto each other's hands, only to use the right amount of tension to provide a leading signal.

4 Be flexible when following

In order to follow well, ladies should try to match the tension of their partner. The exception to this is when arms need to be relaxed and flexible to complete arm-twisting Salsa moves without injury!

5 Keep balanced when you spin

The key to all the spectacular spins in Salsa is not to lose your balance. One way to do it is by spotting while you spin - focussing on one spot at each turn - an age-old dance technique.

6 Use your body

In Salsa dancing, ladies should make use of their body and be sensual, playful and creative. This can involve some creative arm movements, going with what feels right and basically showing off a bit. Enjoy!

Minerals, Numbers, & Foreign Words

All cryptic puzzlers understand that compilers employ words cryptically to obtain their answer, and that they need to recognize those words for what they stand for - LOVE to yield the letter O; SPECIALIST to yield the common suffix ENT; COMPANY to yield CO etc . Many puzzlers built up a list of such words, as have I, with a glossary of over 800 such words.

Beyond such words, compilers often test your knowledge of Minerals, Numbers and Foreign Words so we'll now look at how you cope with such ruses.

MINERALS & ELEMENTS

You'll need to know the symbols for some common elements from the Table of Elements.
The symbol for LEAD is PB but isn't often used because the letters aren't often found in words, whereas the symbols for GOLD ie AU and for SILVER ie AG are commonly employed.

H for HYDROGEN, C for CARBON and O for OXYGEN also find favour. A few others that come in handy are FE for IRON; SN for TIN; AL for ALUMINIUM; CL for CHLORINE; NA for SODIUM and CU for COPPER. It's a good idea to have access to the Table of Elements which should show in most encyclopaedias.

Here are a couple of examples of how these symbols are used in clues:

"Silver has no saint in charge when it comes to disbelieving (8)"

ANSWER = AG NO ST IC

"Copper seldom found on some arrows (6)"

ANSWER = CU RARE (a poison used in blowpipe arrows)

NUMBERS

You need to know your Roman numerals especially

I for 1; IV for 4; V for 5; VI for 6; IX for 9; X for 10, though sometimes you need the letters io; XI for 11; XL for 40;

IL for 49; L for 50; LI for 51; IC for 99; C for 100; CI for 101;

ID for 499; D for 500; DI for 501; IM for 999, M for 1,000;

MI for 1001 etc

NOTE re THOUSAND: K as for KILO or G as for GRAND are sometimes used instead of M. You just have to see what fits.

And don't always expect these Roman numerals to be used in the accepted manner. Compilers use numeric licence as readily as they do literary licence eg

CLUE: 101599 sort of pride (5) ANSWER: CI V IC

Not fair is it!

Here are a couple of more straightforward uses of numbers in clues.

"Five get into a dance and celebrate (5)"

(Instead of 'five' the word 'quintet' could be used)

ANSWER: RE V EL (Here the dance is a 'reel')

"Queen takes in 51 people and then another 11 to make a potion (6)"

ANSWER: E LI XI R (Queen = ER)

NOTE: Sometimes no mention is made of a particular number but you may well be expected to know that a 'cricket team' = XI; a 'rugby' team = XV or that a 'crew' means 'EIGHT' (seldom VIII which is difficult to use in word building.

OFFBEAT NOTE: Sometimes the word 'number' needs to be interpreted as 'something that numbs' ie 'ether' or, less frequently, 'chloroform' and 'anaesthetist'

FOREIGN WORDS

You need to be a person of many parts to do cryptic puzzles, and one of those parts is to be a mini linguist. French words are the most commonly used eg;

To get the letters UN the clue may contain the words A FRENCH ie the French for the indefinite article A

Similarly the words THE FRENCH are seeking the letters LE or LA

The clue words FRENCH ARTICLE make you choose from LE; LES; LA; UN; UNE.
AND FRENCH is often used to get ET, which incidentally can also come from the word ALIEN
ON FRENCH is looking for SUR

Remember 'Sur la table' for 'on the table

EXAMPLE: " Enduring the French swindle (7)

ANSWER: LA STING

Then there are common French words such as TRES for VERY which may be used thus

"Pierre's very hand will result in an unlawful entry (8)

ANSWER: TRES PASS

Here you're expected to know that, to the Frenchman Pierre, VERY is TRES, and that one interpretation of HAND is PASS as in 'Hand me the salt please'

Nobody says that cryptic puzzles are going to be easy right??

Another device to indicate that you need to find a French word is the use of IN PARIS; IN MARSEILLES and so on

EXAMPLE: It's good in Paris as 500 grow older to get restraints (7)

ANSWER; BON D AGE

OTHER LANGUAGES

German words are probably the next most common foreign words to be used eg DER or DAS for THE; JA for YES; EIN for ONE, AN or A; DING for THING; etc

EXAMPLE: Indulge as the German comes after pot (6)

ANSWER: PAN DER

Just as we met PIERRE in the French words above, we meet FRITZ in German words. And words like IN BERLIN indicate that you need a German word

Two other common usages are:

THE ITALIAN to get IL

(For PIERRE as above read MANUEL and watch for words like IN MILAN)

and THE SPANISH to get EL.

(For PIERRE as above read MANUEL and watch for words like IN MADRID)

LATIN gets into the act too eg WITH LATIN is seeking the Latin word for WITH ie CUM

Getting into these foreign words may seem to be adding an extra layer of difficulty to cryptic puzzling but you'll find the more straightforward ones like THE, A, AND etc are enough to get you by.

It would be a good idea to have a French/English dictionary on hand. I personally have a series of the small yellow LANGENSCHEIDT dictionaries to cover most languages.

Well that's your lot for now. Here's hoping that some of the above broadens your cryptic horizons and eases your frustrations with our eternal adversaries, the compilers. Lots of luck.

Tips for Going Clubbing for Men

Im just going to say it right now, I hate clubbing. The musics too loud, a lot of creepy guys are there, and people in my crew are always getting drunk. Not to mention that the club has its reputation as one of the hardest places to pick up women. However for all the negatives there are, I find myself going there every week. On a Saturday night, thats where all the attractive women on.

Clubbing is what separates the men from the boys. Youre either one of the guys dancing with women on the floor, or youre on the sideline with your Corona watching him. Its difficult, but definitely possible.

1. Whoever approaches the most, leaves with the most numbers

When it comes down to it, clubbing is really just a numbers game. Some women come to the club just to dance with their girlfriends (while dressing like they want every guy to approaching them). Its hard to weed out which girls are approachable and which are not. The best thing to do is to just grab your balls, and go for it. If you get rejected, then move on to the next girl. And dont take it personally or let it ruin your night. If you approach a girl, you have a 50% chance of success. If you dont approach, then you have 0%.

2. Its all about Social Proof

Not only do people judge you by what you wear, but they also judge you by who youre with. Whos more attractive: The guy with a few girls at the bar taking shots with them, or the guy with his friends standing near the wall checking out the dance floor? I always try to take females friends along when I can. I like to dance with them at the beginning because it lets me scout the area to see whos there, much better than walking around by yourself.

The majority of women that I meet are through people I already know in the club. After you start going there a while, youll get to know more people and start noticing a lot of the same groups go every week. When I enter I say hi to everyone I know, and usually they bring with them some friends. I get introduced and its game on, no need for the approach phase.

3. What to wear

Many clubs are strict when it comes to the way you dress entering the club. My friend gets in all the time for this one club wearing black converses, but he cant get into another wearing the same thing.

The safe outfit - Black oxfords, dark socks, dark jeans, a button up dress shirt (top 1-2 buttons unbuttoned and you can roll up the sleeves to slightly below the elbows).

You can get into any club wearing this and you wont look bad. But if you read my article on peacocking, then you know you wanna look a little bit different from the standard. Personally I like wearing a t-shirt with an interesting blazer.

I know this is common sense, but please take a shower and wear some anti-perspirant before you go out. Also put on some decent cologne because youre going to get close when you dance. My two favorites are Issey Miyake and Burberry Brit. If you dont have a cologne, ask a female friend to help you pick one out at Sephora or Macys.

4. Have a good wingman

Women are never alone in the club. The best targets in my opinion are when two girls are by themselves. You can approach them by yourself, but the girl youre with is not going to leave her friend to dance with you. Thats where having a good wingman can be helpful. Also wingmen can encourage you to to approach and help you rebound. I remember one time we had an approach go bad. Afterwards my wingman told me Man those bitches are ugly anyways, lets find someone else. We kept going and found ourselves even better women later.

The golden rule is whoever approaches the girls and picks them up, gets first pick. So dont be bitching about getting the fat chick if your buddy made the moves ;).

5. Dont drink too much

Self-explanatory.

6. Timeline

Approach -> Talk -> Dance -> Get her phone # -> Go somewhere with her.

You approach the women with whatever opener you have. You talk to her a bit and engage her. When a song I like comes on I tell her I love this songs. Lets go dance and take her hand to the dance floor.

The dance floor is something that comes with experience and hard to put into words. But basically you make small advances towards her and see what her limits are. Ive had success making out with women on the dance floor, but the majority of them just want to dance at this stage. After dancing I take her back to where my friends are and we all drink. Talk to her a bit more and get her phone number. The clubs usually close at 2 or 3am and I always go out and eat with my friends, so I will invite her along. After that the rest is up to you.

Clubbing can be intimidating for anyone thats going there for the first time. But like all things, youll improve with experience.

Could You Live The Life Of A DJ

So you love music and you want to be a DJ. Well before
taking the plunge there are some things you need to
know about how to become a DJ.

Since there is no such thing as a DJ school to teach
you the steps one of the first things you need to know
is that you need to be original and if possible new in
your talent and technique. Talk to other DJ's if you can
and find out how they broke into the business and get
some tips from them. See if they will take you on as an
apprentice so that you can learn.

A person that aspires to be a disk jockey needs to have
a lot a charisma because other than the music a really
good DJ that has appeal is what draws the crowds. So
develop a character personality that attracts crowds.
You need to know when to tune it down as well so that
you do not overpower and lose that attention.

As a DJ you have to be knowledgeable in all genre of
music, just knowing a few hit songs here and there won't
cut it. So you need to make sure to brush up on your musical
intellect by learning about all types of music. The way to
learn the music it is to listen to it...even if it is not
what you personally enjoy, a DJ has to know and have a
lot of music.

Now, you need to realize that being knowledgeable in all
music doesn't mean that you will play all music. You
will need to develop your own style as well. You need
to work on a certain niche of music lovers and be able
to entertain with the right music, whether it be rock, rap,
soul or house music.

You need to have good quality music, so if you are downloading
it from the Internet, make sure that you are using legal sites
to get it from so that you are getting the best quality.

Plan on either renting or possibly borrowing the equipment that
you will need until you are comfortable with being a DJ. The
last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on expensive
equipment and then find you don't enjoy it as much as you thought you would.
Then ask some friends if you can DJ a party of two for them
for free so you can get your feet wet and see how the crowd
reacts.

An important key you need to remember is that you should
base the music you play on the crowd that you are entertaining.
In other words, don't play rap for a group of elderly
people and don't place bluegrass for a bunch of rockers or rappers.

Learning how to DJ can be a lot hard work as well as fun.
So get out there and make your way in the world of music
and don't forget to have fun while you're at it.

Top DJs don't just play the music they become the dance floor, when they move the crowd moves few other professions in the world can make you feel that buzz...do you want it... get the help you need at http://www.startdjing.com

Is Tupac Shakur Dead or Alive?

This is ultimately the question I am most frequently confronted with - is Tupac dead, or alive? Personally, I believe It all comes down to how you see death, and what YOU believe.

To cut things short, in my honest opinion, I believe Tupac is dead. A lot of people breeze over that though, and thats what the problem is. By saying he is dead, we are suggesting he is no longer alive - he no longer physically exists. But just because he doesnt exist as a physical form, a solid being, doesnt mean hes not here, right? Through Tupacs touching lyrics and music, he reached out to us, and communicated with us. Thats what he was best at. As long as we still listen to his music, his words, he will still touching us and communicating with us. So even after Tupac passed away, his music still remains - his essence still burns in our hearts. Remember, this is just what I believe. Death is a concept, depending on how you interpret it and what you believe, you may think differently. It will be great to hear your thoughts and opinions on this.

So why the Seven Day Theory? One thing Tupac was known for, was his intelligence. No, I dont mean he had outstanding grades at school. A lot of people mis-interpret the word intelligence. Knowledge is what is what one knows. Intelligence is ones ability to know. Tupacs ability to understand was immense. Just by listening to his lyrics, you can tell he was a deep thinker. He was a sensitive young male, who tried so hard to understand why things happened. But unfortunately, when trying to understand death all one is faced with is pain, and anxiety. Tupac wasnt necessarily scared of dying, but of being forgotten.

A lot of people are worried about death, but really I think they are worried about being forgotten. So many memories just erased in an instant. The only possible remedy would be to engrave those memories and stories into his songs, and then create a mystery which baffles the world for years to come. It makes sense doesnt it? Tupac was so intelligent, he would have had the ability to predict this. He would have known by leaving so many clues and hints in his lyrics, and by creating the Seven Day Theory, the world even to this day will be listening to his words in hope.

If this idea was true, it would explain just about everything - apart from the actual shooting itself. Now assuming Tupac died on September 13th 1996, we are left with two possibilities: Tupac was murdered, or he planned his death. Once again, your thoughts are welcome on this. But my personal opinion, is that Tupac planned his death. For someone living in such pain and suffering (according to his lyrics), it wouldnt be hard to give in to death, if it meant he would be perceived as a legend for decades to come. Tupac once said in an interview that he shouldve blown his brains out a long time ago. It is clear that he wasnt afraid to die, and so maybe he was willing to exchange his life for a piece of history.

Remember, this is just what I believe. Everyone has their own thoughts and views regarding Tupacs death. Maybe he is chilling on an island somewhere smoking a blunt. Or perhaps he really was murdered straight.

Piano Lessons With Frederic Chopin

Frederic Chopin was alone among the great composers in that he made his living almost entirely from teaching piano.

During the period around the 1840's he was the most famous piano teacher in Paris, largely because he was also one of the most famous and beloved composers in the world.

His roster of students contained many great and good pianists, among them Mikuli, who became the editor of Chopin's printed piano music.

Chopin taught at home in a lavish, well appointed studio. It contained two pianos: one beautiful Erard grand, on which the student played, and a small cottage upright, at which the master sat and demonstrated.

The master instructed his students to seek out and play only the finest pianos, as he thought playing on inferior instruments ruined a good finger technique. His emphasis at first was on relieving the tension found in many students' hands.

He began at eight in the morning and taught all day. This was because, as he said, "All those white gloves cost money." He was a dandy and fastidious dresser, and traveled only in the highest echelons of Paris high society, where he was in constant demand both as pianist and personality.

To the talented student, he was both inspiring and confusing. Giving great advice was his stock in trade, but one student pointed out that, "The master is so confusing. He demonstrates how I should play, but every time he plays a piece, it is completely different!"

To the untalented, he could be cruel. Many of his students were titled young ladies of very high social standing but little talent who took lessons from Chopin because they could afford to and because it conferred social status to study with such a great master.

But his assistant, Mikuli, noted many times when these rich young ladies would be reduced to tears and run away in horror because the master had criticized their playing most harshly.

Rich or poor, at the end of the lesson the student put their payment in gold on the mantelpiece, while the master discreetly turned his back.

Great masters do not tarnish their hands with money.

Learning Keyboard and Piano: 5 Ways to Achieve Your Musical Goals Without Getting Stuck in a Rut

People usually have some goal or dream that inspires them to take up a musical instrument. But after the initial excitement, its not uncommon to give up, many decide its too difficult, theyre too busy- and whilst theyd still really love to be able to play well, they get stuck in a rut without making progress.

The fact is, mastering a musical instrument is difficult. But its not too difficult for anybody. To succeed, you will need to build your skills in self- control, discipline and determination. Achieving your goals in learning piano or keyboard isnt impossible. If you started out with good intentions that have now fallen by the way-side, read on to discover how to make a fresh start.

Accept you wont become an instant virtuoso

I dont think anyone is a born natural piano or keyboard player. One of the skills to develop as a good player is to make the music appear effortless and natural. But if you think about it, playing an instrument is a pretty unnatural thing to do. We werent designed to do it. And reading music requires uses different parts of the brain to other activities.

If you think you can be really good after just a few weeks of playing, then you will be disappointed and disillusioned very quickly. From the outset, accept that you are going to have to work at many different skills. Realise that at whatever stage you are at, you can always improve. I think this is one of the beauties of learning music everyone is always learning and improving.

Use your current burst of enthusiasm to set you on the right path

If your reading this, youve probably resolved to improve your keyboard playing and practice more. When you finish your internet research, youll most likely feel motivated, resolve to pull yourself together and go and practice for three hours.

But tomorrow, you wont feel so motivated, youll realise your marathon practice session made no difference and youll have about a million more important things to do anyway.

Rather than repeating this cycle again and again, use todays drive and enthusiasm, to make it easier to achieve your goals over a long period of time. Set things up for when you dont feel quite so motivated.

First of all, decide what you really want to ultimately achieve, so that your efforts are focused. Then plan how you can achieve this. Find and book lessons with a teacher, if you havent done so already. Doing this today will commit you to weekly lessons where youll be given you something to work for. Youll also have someone else to monitor your progress.

Next, rearrange the room where you keep your keyboard or piano. Identify any problems with its current location which may be providing an excuse to stop practicing. Perhaps its in the same room as the television or something that causes distraction. Can it be moved? Maybe your practicing disturbs other members of your household. If you have an electronic keyboard or digital piano go out and buy some headphones. Maybe your piano is covered in clutter and junk, sort it out so you can easily get to it and practice. Check that your stool is suitable and not causing you back pain. Make sure you have all the sheet music you need to hand, and organise it so you can easily find what you need.

Identify anything thats going to make it difficult to practice and eliminate it, so you can begin your practice sessions in ease and comfort everyday. This will be more productive than sitting down right now and playing your way to exhaustion.

Build up to good practice habits

The final task for today to plan when youre going to practice. Dont plan too much because youll never stick to it. Start small. Practice in short manageable chunks which you can then build on. Why not try practicing in the advert breaks of the TV shows you watch in the evening- so you only practice for three minutes at a time. You can fit short exercises into this time slot, and you wont be sacrificing anything else. Once you can manage this, then you could try scheduling 10 minute slots during the day.

Practicing in lots of little sessions is usually more effective than sitting down for an hour a day. Also, youll find if you play more often, then youll probably end up getting carried away and practice for longer anyway. Its better motivation for yourself if you aim to play for 5 minutes and actually do 7, then if you schedule 30 minutes but never get round to it at all.

Accept there are no real short cuts. Be prepared for some hard work.

Some times, you will need to keep practicing certain things over and over. Theres just no way round it. If your prepared for this from the outset, then you will be entering your challenge with the right frame of mind. Sometimes things will be time consuming, but simply knuckling down and getting through it will pay off in the long run.

This is different to practicing things with no real thought. If you are working on a piece, identify sections that need the most work. Try not to over practice things that your already good at. If you keep your practice sessions focused, you will achieve much more.

Keep your goals clear- persevere at them.

To stay focused, make sure you are clear about why you wanted to learn keyboard or piano in the first place. What were your goals? To be able to play your favourite song well? To write songs and have a top- ten hit? To play carols with your family at Christmas? To pass grade five? To be in a position to help your children with their music studies? Whatever motivated you initially, dont forget it.

How about making a sign with your music goals written on it and keeping it on top of your piano? That way, youll be reminded of your motivation every time you walk past it. If youve lost sight of what you wanted to achieve, youll find it difficult to get out of your rut.

If you keep focused on your goal and persistently work towards it, you will eventually achieve it.

Surreal - I Dream of Kimmie

As with any competition Kimmie is involved in, I usually don't watch until after I've read about the results; or I can fast forward my "Tivo" to the scores to see her standings. Then I decide how to watch that particular event. But this competition was unusual, I had no choice but to endure the anticipation of being in the crowd; part of it. However, it was still too nerve wrecking to watch.

Kimmie was the last to skate. Once she had performed, she sat patiently awaiting her scores. However, her body language spelled anticipation; meanwhile, the commentators, while the viewers and the audience were on an edge, felt compelled to comment on Kimmie's past performances, from the good ones to her recent "disasters." Soon everyone stood, wondering what was taking so long; I heard some people say that they were tabulating the scores, while others said they were counting her jumps. This part alone should have told me something was strange because this is not the norm.

A reporter came to the crowd speaking on behalf of Kimmie, proudly saying how he knew she had it in her, when another one of Kimmie's fans pulled out a recent article written by this fellow discrediting Kimmie. Anticipation had kept me from watching Kimmie's actual performance. It meant too much. However, my gut reaction was that she had won! I started to dance around, some people chanted with me, others clapped. While some glared. The scores had not come out yet. However, there was this feeling in me that she had won! After all she is a winner!

Soon after the party had simmered down, there was a disquiet in the large arena; Kimmie was being interviewed. She had regained her "World Title." It was exhilarating.

Dancing with the Stars: Results Show 5, Season 3

Another upset at the Dancing with the Stars results show last night. Much to everyone's astonishment, Willa Ford was voted off. But in a show full of twist endings (likely a compliment of the producers), it's not all that surprising.

Willa Ford's performance on Tuesday did not strike as being particularly outstanding this time around, and unlike Sara Evans, Willa does not have the advantage of having a strong fan base. Still there is injustice to see the likes of mediocre dancers Sara and Jerry return because of their massive popularity while better, hard-working dancers are being booted off week after week.

Instead of acting all surprised and shocked at the results, the judges would do better to ensure that a bigger score gap is created between the good and the bad dancers when scores are delivered. It's ridiculous to think that only three points separate lifeless Sara Evans from dance whiz Mario Lopez. If viewers are going to vote for the most popular contestants regardless of their dancing ability, we might as well make the task much harder for them.

Despite of this endless charade, I found some redemption in the fact that Monique Coleman made it to the next round without being placed in the bottom two. Could it be that viewers are finally seeing how fantastic she is? Without a doubt, her rumba was smoking hot and impressive. She is the rising star of the pack.

As far as the results show itself goes, I am beginning to think it acts merely a filler show to grab more viewers. There is absolutely nothing substantial about it. The showcase dance pieces are looking more lackluster and amateurish each week. Often, the guest singers and vocal groups are given more attention than the dancers themselves. If I wanted to see pop vocal performances, I'd have tuned in to VH1 or MTV. I don't know about you, but I definitely smell money-hungry producer hawks here.

Guitar Lesson: How To Improvise The Classical Guitar Way

When I was a fifteen years old guitarist playing rock solos and classical guitar pieces I remember that I had a desire to be able to improvise on my guitar in a classical manner.

Nowadays I have developed this skill and I love to improvise in the style of composers like Sor, Tarrega, Paganini or others or just trying to find myself somewhere among the notes. These special moments are a form of meditation. They clear my mind and also helps me as a composer to stimulate my creative abilities.

The most important reason for learning classical guitar improvisation is that it's fun!

If you learn classical guitar improvisation it will benefit you in many other ways too:

1. It will be easier for you to memorize classical guitar sheet music.

2. You will find it easier to compose your own guitar pieces in a classical guitar style.

3. You can make up your own techniqal exercises on your guitar on the go.

4. You will understand your guitar better.

There are many ways to develop classical guitar improvisation. How?

You can start with major scales, experimenting with easy chords, or easy classical guitar pieces. The most basic requisite is that you want to learn this art and with this desire you will find ways to practice classical guitar improvisation in all your guitar playing.

I will just mention using classical guitar pieces in this article. But how do you begin?

May I suggest that you begin with an easy melody with just one voice or maybe a two voice piece with bass notes on open strings. Learn a couple of bars by heart and play the melody over and over again and try to change the melody slightly without losing the classical touch.

The ultimate exercise is to use advanced classical guitar solos.

If you think about it you will realize that classical guitar pieces are filled with wonderful licks, more or less complicated.

These licks can be developed and added upon to give you material that will help you developing your improvisational skills.

For example, take a two bar passage in a classical guitar piece that you like and practice it until you master it and then memorize it.

Now you can play around with the passage, break it down, change it, analyze it and so on. If you want to improve as an improvisational guitarist and musician you can regard classical guitar pieces as collections of very musical licks just waiting to be used.

I hope these hints will motivate you to reap the benefits from improvising the classical guitar way.

Music, Culture, and Reality

A psychoactive is defined as that which has a profound or significant affect on the mental processes. Although typically used in the context of drugs and substances, this concept is often extended to anything evoking a seemingly 'mystical experience.' What people describe as mystical experiences are indistinguishable, neurologically and empirically, from deep and poignant religious experiences. Moments of oneness and insight are typical in both cases. In "The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902)," William James describes mystical experiences as ineffable, noetic, passive (rather, a sense of loss of control), and fleeting. From the remote mystics of Sufism and Kabbalah, to modern day 'urban shamans,' psychonauts have sought methods other than imbibement to investigate the cosmos within. Through meditation, breath control, lucid dreaming, sensory deprivation, and a host of other methods, music has stood among cultures in this service probably since early man first danced around campfires.

Ethnomusicolgist Gilbert Rouget explores the connection between music and trance throughout history. Perhaps music is more than simply a mortal construct, rather having cosmic significance. Playing music (and truly appreciating music) forces an individual to focus on the present moment, which in turn is the cornerstone of meaningful experience. This emphasis on the present moment is the consummation of all other psychonautical resources (mediation, entheogens, etc.). Subscribers of the shamanic and mystical often view the passage of time as an illusion of the human mind, and regard a 'perpetual now' as true reality. Interestingly this is where science begins to align with the esoteric.

Quantum Mechanics argues that particles move backwards as well as forwards in time and appear in all possible places at once. String theory proposes that the physical world is composed of little, tiny strings of vibrating energy (It seems appropriate to allude to chordophones). Terrence McKenna, recounting a DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) induced experience, asserts that the constant dance of 'machine elves,' (entities occupying a parallel world) creates reality as we perceive it. Are the rhythms of music akin to the language of reality? Is music a method of staying in contact with the underlying 'Logos,' being the true virtue in which all things exist? Whether it be Spring's hymn of birds and bees or the elegant, geometrical dance of our physical world, music plays the universal tongue in a reality seemingly ripe with babbling discord.

What's So Great About a Bob Marley Poster?

What exactly is the attraction when it comes to Bob Marley posters? They seem to be very popular amongst the college crowd for one. Walk through any college campus, and check out all the Marley t-shirts for starters. Carry it a little bit further, and start asking questions. I'll bet if you asked 100 students who Bob Marley was, the vast majority of them could tell you. A few could probably name a few of his songs, and if your really lucky a few more could sing you a few words. Your safest bet for this would be to ask the question around the music building. I'd hate to hear a Bob Marley song mangled by some engineering student that was rejected in the first round of American Idol.

Now, I don't suggest this, but if you were able to see what was hanging on the walls of many of those same students dorm walls, I bet there would be more then a few Bob Marley posters, photographs or prints. Why exactly is that? For an artist that hasn't released a single new song in over 25 years that is certainly a perplexing phenomena. Perplexing, but true. The reason for no new material, is that Bob passed away from cancer over 25 years ago. His music, artwork, and image still seem to pervade our culture. Only a few icons seem to have achieved that the way he has. A few others that come to mind would be Mariln Monroe, and John Lennon. The thing they all seem to have in common, is that there was more to them then just their art. They all had a message to was distilled in their work.

So why so many posters for Bob then? Here's some interesting stats for the Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Bob Marley. According to Wordtracker, there are approximately 5000 internet searches a day for the phrase John Lennon, approximately 10,000 for Marilyn Monroe, and approximately 18,000 for Bob Marley. Kinda interesting isn't it. What is it that makes Bob Marley almost twice as looked for as Marilyn Monroe, and almost fout times as looked for as John Lennon? Honestly, I don't know.

It definitely indicates an interes in Bob Marley, and all things related to Bob Marley, such as music, lyrics, artwork, videos, photographs and posters. I think a little further research is warranted here, to explain these numbers. Suffice it to say though, that Bob Marley was about more than just Reggae music. There was a tone and timbre to the man that went message deep. But, what exactly was that message. Peace, love, brotherhood, understanding, compasion, passion? Yes, actually it was all the above.

If you like to see my favorite Bob Marley posters, or simply browse through a listing of some really cool Bob Marley posters in your inbox be sure to visit http://foolishmumbles.com/DigitalCameraRecommendations/

Meet Me In St. Louis

Go West, Back In Time
Venture on the Shores of Mississippi

Intrinsically woven through time, the old and the new, St. Louis abounds with rich color, flavor and taste. Whether you are passing through on historical Highway 66, or visiting on business, St. Louis will whet your appetite for more. More rich, mouth-watering entrees. From southern to soulful. Satiate your appetite with historical finds like Lewis & Clark. Top it off with dozens of cultural and sporting events.

Grab your walking shoes, sunscreen, bottled water and camera. You can walk through the botanical gardens, ride on a horse drawn carriage or fly in a vintage aircraft.

The Gateway Arch is an inverted, three-sided catenary curve, gleaming, historical monument which commemorates Lewis & Clarks expeditions. A quick four minute tram ride to the top gives a spectacular view of the city and the mighty Mississippi River. Americas freedom and explorations into Western Territory are methodically illustrated here. Underneath the Arch is the Museum of Westward Expansion featuring 100 years of human history with murals depicting scenes along Lewis & Clarks journey of discovery. Dozens of national treasures including handwritten journals, maps, equipment and other artifacts are displayed here.

After the advent of the steamboat, St. Louis grew into a thriving river city. Then came the railroad and in the 1930s an ambitious local movement led to the purchase by the Federal Government of a large riverfront area and plans were begun for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Due to its industrial and engineering capacity, St, Louis emerged as a leader in aviation and automotive production after World War II and the Korean War.
St. Louis began as a fur-trading outpost on the site of what is now called Lacledes Landing. Named after the French fur trapper Pierre Laclede who began the first settlement, The Landing, is an interesting assortment of shops, galleries, offices and restaurants. At night it comes alive with music and entertainment; Blues, Jazz, Opera, Cabaret, Symphony and Rock n Roll can be heard on the streets.

Music, dance and theatre are plentiful in and around the city. St. Louis launched many talented actors, musicians and writers. Playwright Tennessee Williams lived in St. Lois, as did poets T.S. Eliot and Maya Angelou. Actors; Betty Grable, Vincent Price and Buddy Ebson from the Golden Age, to current favorites, John Goodman and Kevin Kline have all called St. Louis home. From comedy and drama, to Shakespeare, a cultural experience is offered for any age. (www.explorestlouis.com) (One Lewis & Clark Trail

Sports & Recreation

The International Bowling Museum stands proudly adjacent to Busch Stadium endowing the public with a century of history and colorful memorabilia. This is the only bowling museum in the world and offers more than 5,000 years of bowling history.

A team of archeologists from the University of Pisa, Italy, found the oldest bowling alley in a city called Medinet Madi. The Italian team has unearthed an open structure dating back to the Ptolemaic age. The floor is composed of a single large block of limestone with a groove 10 cm deep and 20 cm wide. In the middle there is a 12 cm-square hole. They also found two balls of polished limestone, one of which fits the groove and the other the square hole. The structure is like no other found in the ancient world.
Earlier versions of pins are on display at the museum.

Until medieval period, sports were steeped in pagan rituals. Denounced by priests, a ban was placed on bowling in 1443 and 1447, and was permitted again in 1468. Bowling was popular at festivals, dances, and baptisms with variations. One variation of bowling is Quilles De Neuf (ninepins).
Bowling was first mentioned in Rip Van Winkle, by Washington Irving.
Pinsetters in the 19th century earned .03 to .05 cents per line. The sport prospered in the 1930s and 40s. The poor image was upgraded by the 3 As; automation, architecture and air conditioning. In the 1950s, television turned regular people into heroes. The Womens Professional Hall of Fame is on the third level. And on the lower level, a bowling lane is set up for visitors and enthusiasts to enjoy a few frames with their admission. (Across from Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO 63102, Phone: (314) 231-6340)

Shared Heritage

A candy apple red convertible given to Mark McGwire, has been donated to the city and is on the display in the St. Lois Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum. A plethora of leather worn gloves, home-run tattered bats and printed tickets adorn the glass cases. Young and mature athletes started their careers in St. Louis and leave behind a legacy. Heroes were made from honest, hardworking down-home lads who have a passion for baseball.

Sports are an obsession in St. Louis with active sports centers, loyal fans and professional athletes. St. Louis is home to: Cardinals (baseball), the hockey Blues, and the NFL Rams. St. Louis is one of the few cities to host the summer Olympics, 1906, in conjunction with the Worlds Fair. The U.S. Senior Open draws crowds from every state in the union. A single admission price of $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for children ages 5 to 12 covers the entry fee for both the baseball and bowling museums. A joint museum/stadium tour ticket costs only $9.50 for adults and $7.50 for kids. The museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For the Love of the Game

While many baseball players look forward for their time off after the long season is over in the fall, many of them do things that couldn't do during the season. Some of these things are to enjoy their time off, being with their families, taking vacations around the world or just relax. Who wouldn't like to do these things when possible? But some continue to play ball.

That's right. Some players look forward for the off-season so they can go back to their home countries and be the major-league superstars they already are. Most of these players are from the Latin American countries where baseball is the passion of many. During the winter months of December, January and February, there's a baseball league going on in countries like Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico where the weather is not less than perfect for baseball - around 80 degrees. Stars like Miguel Tejada, Ronnie Belliard, Francisco "The Kid" Rodriguez, and the newest Detroit Tiger Miguel Cabrera are few of the ones that return home to play in their native country's professional league.

What many people don't know is that in these countries, baseball is not only a past-time; it's what everyone talks about - at the job, at school, with friends and family. Especially at the end of January, when things are heating up and each country's league is playing the final games to determine who will carry the flag and represent the country in the Caribbean Series. But you wonder why would major league stars risk their careers by playing at their home countries? Remember, most of the Latin American players in the major leagues came out of their home countries' winter league system. That is why the number of Latin baseball players is growing and are wanted more by the MLB teams. Now it's the time for the already-major-league-stars to inspire the upcoming talent and help them reach the highest level in baseball.

If you want to know what baseball is like in Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or Mexico, then combine the feelings of the NCAA Basketball Final Four, a soccer match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, a Yankees - Red Sox game at the end of September, and any rivalry you can think of. Now, add to that, salsa music, the sound of drums and whistles playing and people dancing and chanting everywhere, some beer, and the great talent these players have to play ball. Imagine that, and is exactly what baseball is all about in these countries.

And you wonder - why do major- league-stars want to go home and play during their off season? I think you can answer that for yourself.

The Quest for Online Jazz Guitar Lessons

There are many books on jazz and jazz lessons available at online shopping sites like Amazon, but these books can be somewhat cold for the learner, because there is no communication between the author of the method and the student. This is just one of the reasons people turn to online guitar lessons.

Why people prefer online courses as opposed to conventional books:

1. Some Online courses are paid for in monthly instalments which are usually much cheaper than paying a jazz master for weekly classes. This is thanks to the amount of people they can reach worldwide. The more students they have, the less they need to charge each student to cover their operating costs and salaries. Some courses are even a one time payment, so you will not be charged again!

3. You get unlimited access to lessons whenever you want to study, and just like with books, the added advantage that you can learn at your own pace. ...Even at 3 o'clock in the morning.

4. Most guitar online courses have contact information for you to use if you need help with anything you do not understand, or something you are having trouble with.

5. These courses also make use of multimedia tools like mp3 downloadable backing tracks and examples of the exercises being learned; videos so you can see the exercises being executed by a real teacher or teachers, and software helpers like chord finders and tuners, which often come free with your subscription.

Final words

The best way to learn jazz is, no doubt, having your own private mentor to show you what you need to learn, when you need to learn it, and the best way to achieve your end goals. But conventional lessons are expensive and many wanting to expand their musical skills may have obligations which limit their being able to attend lessons at conventional times. Thanks to Internet we have the perfect alternative: the online lesson.

Take Advantage Of The Economic Downturn - To Become Your Own Boss!

It is that phase in the economic cycle when people do a reality check. Uncertainty looms ahead, and managements drive themselves crazy figuring out where the next big check is going to come from to keep the wheels of the organization running. Cowering in our own cubicle or workbench, we never know when they will hand us our proverbial pink slip and bid us goodbye.

There are two alternatives to handle this economic condition. The first is the tried and tested. Dignity in one pocket and resume in the other, we knock at the doors of the other companies whose outward facade conveys an impression of everything being hunky-dory inside. And get rejected by the people who aren't sure when they themselves will get the boot.

Let us consider this alternative from a different angle. When we were born, we used to be cleaned and washed, fed and clothed and generally taken care of. We used to look up to somebody to do all that for us. Haven't we continued with the same pattern, of looking up to somebody, of expecting a job to become available that we can perform, which will feed us and clothe us and generally fulfill our material needs? Isn't it time we grew up?

As kids, we were given an extra dollop of ice-cream for being good. Remember the visits of the Santa Claus every year? Now we expect somebody to pat our ego and nurse our pride with lofty-sounding designations and nifty little perks - the corner office, that special parking space, the vacation with the family, the topped-up bonus and that ESOP handout, the promotion that gives us the opportunity to look down upon people who once were peers, thank you. And when these goodies are not forthcoming, we sulk and we pout and we go look for another Santa Claus. Tell me really, have we grown up at all?

And so let us see what the second alternative looks like. Here it is!

Which is to use the season of doom and economic gloom to go inward and realize that this actually is an opportunity to get out of the rat race once and for all and do our own thing. Set up our own shop. Be our own boss. Hoist our own flag. I am running out of symbolism, but you get the idea.

Returning again to the kid analogy, remember the things that we enjoyed doing when we were young and not yet entered the rat race, the things that thrilled us the most? When we did what we did because we liked doing what we were doing, and not because we had to do what we ended up doing because that was what the boss wanted us to do. Or else. There is money to be made, you know, in doing things that we enjoy and are passionate about. It is only a question of figuring out how. Let me also tell you, that the figuring out how happens only during times of economic recession, and not when the going is good and everybody is smiling and doing the rumba.

"Realize your own potential" becomes a cliche when the HR boys and girls use it while dangling the golden cage before us. It becomes a mantra when we use it to really understand how far we can go when we are on our own. Have we forgotten life outside the cage? Have we forgotten - or worse, never ever known? - what it means to be free and to do our own thing? To set our own goals, to make our own targets, and to soar as high as our wings and our ambitions can take us?

Or have we become rather addicted to our inner child's needs being taken care of by that neatly-suited-booted HR manager and his / her team of cohorts and headhunters and detectives, spying on every move we make outside the office and trying to figure out what must be going on in our mind, so that we can be, uh, appropriately manipulated?

Or have we rather come to enjoy the performance reviews where the senior takes malicious pleasure in nitpicking the omissions and commissions that we may or may not have indulged in throughout the year? Like the stern teacher handing over the grades in class. The armpits used to sweat the same way then too, didn't they?

Or have we rather come to relish the politics and the backbiting and the gossip and the bitching in the office and the workplace? The latest news about this affair and that, the latest news on who is in favor and who has fallen out of favor, the devil who is badmouthing about us behind the back ... oh, won't we miss them all?

Let's step out of the world we have immersed ourselves in and become comfortable in. And step into the world of freedom. Let's find the vocation that we enjoy the most. Let's learn the right skills that are needed to survive and thrive in the market. And take the plunge with faith and belief in self. Success and prosperity are waiting to be ours, if only we reach out for them. Let us be brave for a change. Let's reach out! Now!

Belly Dancing Turkey - The Super Sultry and Seductive Belly Dancing Style From Turkey

Belly Dancing is a very popular form of entertainment in Turkey. It is quite common to find dancers performing in nightclubs and restaurants all over the country. However belly dancers are often hired for private events such as weddings, festivals, shows and parties.

In Turkey belly dancing has a long-standing tradition that has lately become a hot tourist attraction. In spite of its popularity these dances remain an intrinsic part of the private lives of all Turks regardless of age or class, and in its most basic form it is a dance for fertility.

In its native tongue it is called "Gobek dans" and it is still growing and changing even today especially as it comes under the influence of various cultures. And the authorities are mixed on where they believe the original dance came from, some say from the Greeks and others claim that it is from the Egyptians.

In The Clubs

The art is very popular in Turkish nightclubs and is a profitable profession for women who receive their tips from men literally showering them in paper money, or by stuffing bills into their costumes. And of course a little known fact is that men also belly dance. It is not uncommon for men to jump up out of the audience and accompany the woman on stage. Of course this happens more often at private parties or festivals than in the clubs.

Worldwide Popularity

As belly dancing spreads the globe it is enjoying increased popularity as it hits different parts of the world. Perhaps the allure of the dance is due to its rich heritage that makes it so unique as a dance style. Because of this heritage many people associate the belly dancing from Turkey with religion and exoticism. And of course this causes some strong opinions about the art; some love it while others despise it.

The Music

In Turkey the dancer is generally a well-curved woman, with strong abs muscles who dances to a backdrop of traditional music. She will often accompany the music with the use of clangs, which are the little bells used during a Turkish belly dance. The music is very rhythmic and the dance emphasizes the movement of the hips and chest. The movements are solid and organic as the dancer moves bare foot across the floor in order to remain connected to the earth.

The Movements

The cadence of the dancers body parts are the main characteristic of this style. The dancer moves with fluid, supple and well-integrated movements which are very sensual in nature. Most movements concentrate on the hips and shoulders, which alternate with shimmy and sliding moves.

Various other items are used by dancers, which are specific to Turkey such as serpents, swords, veils and candles. These items are most widely used in Turkish folk dances, and are said to have mystical powers. The use of a snake during dances come from the ancient cults and are a foundational element symbolizing male and female sexuality and even the concept of immortality.

House Music DJ Magazines

Here is a review of the best house music dj magazines on the planet. Over the past decade a lot of magazines in the electronic music dj arena have gone down, and only the strongest have survived. Recently there has been a major increase in people who are interested in electronic music and the following magazines are blooming with advertising dollars pouring in!

  1. MixMag - has been noted as the best selling dance magazine in the world. Unfortunately they don't have an online version of this magazine but their inclusion of cd's with each release makes it a pretty good subscription to have. For instance, they had an amazing new compilation from Paul Oakenfold in a past issue! The annual subscription runs for 36.00 in the UK and 60.00 in US/Canada so it's a little pricey, but again the inclusion of a cd with each magazine. Get a subscription at www.mixmag.net
  2. DJMag - another UK magazine which is once again getting a revival through all the major music events and releases offers each copy in PDF format for a fraction of the price. The printed price is 3.95 an issue whereas the online PDF download is only 83p or you can get an annual membership for just 10 (38 printed)! Very smart indeed as this just bloat their subscribers! The great thing about this magazine is all the insider info on all the upcoming events several months in advance. The downside is that the layout is not the most professional and it is a little hard on the eyes as to where you should focus on. Nevertheless, you can try a 2 week trial subscription online to see if you like it. Get a subscription at www.djmag.com
  3. BPM Magazine - By far the most successful North American DJ magazine, BPM has taken on whole new world offering their editions free to read online! And what's even better is that the intelligent interface of the magazine allows you to click on all the links to the web sites! Looking at the vast high quality advertising in this magazine it becomes quite apparent why it's online version is free. Probably the most stylish of all the magazines there is quite a lot of variety in the fashion and dj gear reviewed in BPM. If you still want a hard copy of this magazine the rate is only $20/yr for US Subscribers and $40 for Canadian subscribers. Get a subscription at www.bpmmagazine.net
  4. URB Magazine - features a blend of hip hop and electronic music info with DJ culture, technology and studio gear reviews. For US subscribers only they have a $10/6 issue special going on right now or you can get an annual membership (10 issues) for $15 US, $40 for Canadians, and $70 for international orders. How to Play the Keyboard

Learning how to play the keyboard has several advantages over learning how to play the piano. Although you might think learning one is as simple as the other, the keyboard as an instrument is superior in many ways.

With a piano, you only have one type of instrument that you can play...the piano itself. Electronic keyboards allow you to mimic the sounds of dozens of different instruments. Some more expensive models can mimic the sounds of hundreds of instruments and allow your to lay tracks...right on the keyboard!

When you learn how to play the keyboard, you are learning all of those instruments without having to take additional lessons. Sounds can include:

Many types of pianos (grand piano, electronic, etc.)

Percussion instruments

Organs of all kinds (even harmonica!)

Stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello, contrabass)

Brass instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone)

All of the Woodwinds (clarinet, flute, saxophone)

Sitar

Banjo

Bag Pipe

The piano sounds that come from a keyboard can include grand piano, electric piano, honky-tonk and many, many more! There may even be special effects available like bird noises, telephone rings and other novelty sounds.

When you learn how to play the keyboard, you'll also get to choose from a variety of background sounds that can accompany your main melody. You can normally choose from one of the following:

Pop

Dance

Rock

Jazz

Latin

Hip-hop

More advanced keyboard models may have more choices.

Learning play the keyboard is perfect for beginning music students. There are keyboard models that will show you each note that needs to be played next. It is an easy method of learning that guides students into a better understanding of music.

Playing with a keyboard is also more portable than playing a piano. A keyboard, if it is small enough, can go anywhere with you. This makes it easy to practice in different environments. Keyboards are easy to find. While pianos can cost thousands of dollars, you can find a keyboard for as low as in the classified ads.

There are more complex keyboards that cost much, much more. But for a small investment you can decide if playing the keyboard is really right for you. In the future, you can upgrade your keyboard choice to a more featured model.

Learning play the keyboard is one of the easiest and most fun ways to get into music. There are plenty of songs available for the keyboard, and with practice there is no limit to what you can play! You can experiment a lot with the keyboard; and even create your own one-man band, complete with drums, piano, horns, string instruments and possibly even your own voice. Who knows? You may even produce a demo that you could send to a music executive. The possibilities can be endless!
