Customer Review: Old style opera! In the bad sense.
Well, this is a good oportunity to watch and listen Fleming, Villazón, Bruson and Conlon together. But the mise en scene by Mrs. Placido Domingo is so bad. Looks like a poor old style in a little town! And Fleming, one of my favorites sopranos, is not Violetta.

and it was not remotely close to being a great Traviata. Fleming did not project well; Villazon seemed stiff and nervous; Conlon is clearly not an accomplished Verdian conductor; the sets were average at best. Too many USA people just give any Fleming performance an inflated rating because she is attractive and is from the USA.

What can I say I LOVE THIS CD! But whats so good about it well number 1 I love the lead singers voice (Jose Guadalupe). To me he has a voice to kill for but thats just my opinion you might think diferently. But as far as i'm concerned i think this is a super album to buy cause every song on here is so good my personal favorite well... it would have to be number 3 (Aqui No Mas.) Coming Out of the Dark

Designed as a companion to the singer's 1991 Into The Light--World Tour concert video, this look behind the scenes in Gloria Estefan's career draws drama and urgency from her recovery following a disastrous bus accident, which crippled the Cuban-American performer even as her popularity pushed further into the pop mainstream. Produced for the video arm of her record company, Coming Out of the Dark is hardly an objective documentary, laced as it is with testimonials from executives and frankly designed as a valentine to the feisty star; when we're given an "informal" look at Estefan composing new material in her music room, there isn't a figurative hair out of place as captured through these expertly shot segments.

The story, however, is intrinsically compelling, and Estefan offers her fans glimpses into the genesis of the songs from her Into the Light album. The singer's steely resolve, which doubtless explained the speed of her recovery, is visible, too, as is her sure sense of command over recording sessions. Brief performance excerpts show her saucy style of salsa-drenched pop, as well as less satisfying stabs at boiler-plate pop-rock songs that were aimed squarely at the charts. A segment chronicling a video shoot with choreographer-turned-director Kenny Ortega reveals both the technical intricacy of shooting elaborate dance sequences and the hyperbolic coddling platinum stars can expect from their most diplomatic handlers. --Sam Sutherland

Differences are inevitable when two or more persons come together. It would be pointless and boring for two or more to come together if there are no differences. Some differences are pleasant; others can be disconcerting. Differences can accelerate to disharmony, conflict, competition, or war.

While a reasonable amount of conflict can be creative and enriching, conflict that is not properly managed can be harmful. Interpersonal conflicts as contrasted to conflicts of ideas or principles are in special need of careful management. Viewing conflict or disharmony as the expression of differences can help to take the fear from conflict. Of course, if it is a heated or emotionally charged conflict, just re-naming it is unlikely to defuse the charge. But it may be enough for you to find your place of harmony in the conflict.

Living in conscious harmony is like playing in a symphony and knowing that we are playing in a symphony. At any given moment, our section of the orchestra may be in temporary harmony or temporary disharmony. Both group members and musicians must have the conscious intention to strive for harmony without being discouraged by the momentary notes of disharmony that add interest to the experience.

The symphonys composer wrote a score which the conductor interprets and the musicians play with different instruments, in their own style, according to their ability. At some times, we are more aware of one instrument than another. Or we hear a solo or a duet.

When we listen deeply to the music, we notice space between the notes: rhythm. Colors and tones and volume add texture and interest: timbre. We have different responses to different parts: feelings.

Satisfaction increases when everyone in the orchestra reads at the same place on the same sheet of music. At some times, its important for a musician to play softly to blend with the rest of the sounds and add texture. At other times, its important to play loudly, even being the center of attention. Rhythms might change, even in the middle of a piece. Sounds might fight with each other to heighten drama before leading to resolution.

Joy happens when everyone perceives the symphony as all One, with each instrument playing an important part. In order to live in conscious harmony, we must embrace the concept that we are all One. Comparing the interactions of individuals in groups to a the interactions of musicians in a symphony or an orchestra can be powerful.

History: Fiction or Science? (Chronology, No. 1)

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

The professional historians faint as prominent mathematician Doctor Fomenko et al research the known historical data and come to fairly controversial conclusions. For example, the English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. As the sign of recognition of the special role of the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben. The Russian historians brand it as pseudoscience because Dr Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by over two centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called `Tartars and Mongols' were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a trilingual state and aspiring Global Empire with Arabic and Turkic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient proto-Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities and the hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called `blood tax'). Their `invasions' were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves for a fact that official Russian history is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scholars brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs. Their ascension to the throne was the result of conspiracy, so they charged these German historians-imports with the noble mission of making Romanov's reign look legitimate. Dr Fomenko et al prove Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. These rulers represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate Godounovs and the ambitious Romanov upstarts. The European historians fume not only because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History but for asserting that all medieval European Kings and Princes were but breakaway vice-regents and vassals of the Global Empire who badly needed glorious and very `ancient' past in order to legitimize their new independence from the Empire. Dr Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one: the Ancient Rome: the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the 14th century A. D., the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, the Ancient Egypt: the pyramids of Giza become dated to the 11th to 14th century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global Empire, no less. The civilization of the `ancient'' Egypt is irrefutably dated to the 11th to 15th century A. D. following the breakthrough in decoding of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone and painted on the temple walls. Arabic historians may find some consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire as a part of the Global empire in the 15th - 17th century. The trouble is that this Empire was initially a proto-Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, but built in 1550-1557 A.D. by Sultan Suleiman according to Fomenko and Islam with all its key figures is datable to 15th 16th century A. D.! The Chinese historians are also an unhappy lot because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such history. Period. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the 17th 18th century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation. The Divinity excommunicates Dr Fomenko because the history of religions according to Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the 11th century and Jesus Christ ), Bacchic Christianity (11th to 12th century, before and after Jesus Christ), Jesus Christ Christianity (12th to 14th century) and its subsequent mutations (15th to 17th cy) into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on..; and The Old Testament written after the New Testament in xiv-xvi cy A.D., if you please! Everybody served? Saint Augustine was quite prescient when he said: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did! The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed. Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century. Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false. You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years! The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century! New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science. The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits. The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers. Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes. We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors. Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources. The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part. When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources. There are no answers to simple questions: When were these primary sources written? Where and by whom were these sources found? It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later. As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time, innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts. The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries. Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing. This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks. Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C. `Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed. Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history. They show a picture both contradictory and confusing. All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous: Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe! The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century! It was available for less than fifteen so I picked it up. I liked Shakira's first major Spanish album before her international success. I hadn't really listened to her newer stuff. When I put it in I was pleasantly surprised. The visuals are great and the sound is even better. To be honest I do skip a few songs whenever I watch it but I still consider it a good purchase for the price.

All of us know what jazz is when we hear it, but trying to define it is a different matter. With so many variant styles, coming up with an accurate definition of jazz is difficult if not impossible.

But I suppose that an article on jazz really ought to attempt to define the term jazz. My Thorndike-Barnhart Dictionary defines jazz like this:

*jazz (jaz), noun. 1. American music with the accents falling at unusual places; syncopated music. 2. Slang, liveliness adj. of or like jazz: a jazz band.

Besides not telling us very much, it is also obviously false. I think immediately of ballads played by jazz musicians, such as Thelonious Monks Round Midnight and Bill Evans Peace Piece, and countless other examples. They are based on neither syncopation nor liveliness; they are slow, extremely thoughtful, and the antithesis of jazzy. Yet they are considered by both jazz musicians and jazz critics alike to be well within the mainstream of jazz.

Lets try A New Dictionary of Music and see if we can get closer to the essence of jazz:

*jazz, a term used at least from 1914 for a type of American popular music originating among blacks of New Orleans and taken over also by whites; also used generally for various types of dance music indebted to this (though purists reserve the term for such music as retains the original flavor and the original basis of improvisation.) The jazz idiom, characterized by certain syncopations over strongly reiterated rhythms, has influenced e.g. Lambert, Stravinsky, and Milhaud, as well as many American composers.

Thats better than the Thorndike-Barnhart definition, but it still leans heavily toward defining jazz in terms of rhythm alone: characterized by certain syncopations over strongly reiterated rhythms. I think again of ballads, but also of much contemporary jazz which is not characterized by certain syncopations,: such as the work of pianists Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.

What then is jazz? If the general dictionaries and musical dictionaries cant satisfactorily answer the question, what hope is there for us?

Ask a hundred jazz musicians what jazz is, and youll get a hundred different answers (I know Ive asked at least a dozen and gotten as many different responses.)

I would like to suggest that the answer may lie, not in music, but in semantics.

I think it is entirely possible that we are lumping together widely disparate types of music, and labeling them all with the term jazz, then wondering why we cant come up with a lexical definition of the term. Maybe we should abandon the word jazz, and use terms such as improvised fast syncopated music, or improvised slow non-syncopated music. Maybe we should, but we wont. So we are stuck with the non-definable term jazz.

So lets not define jazz.

We all know what it is, more or less. We would disagree mainly in the grey areas, such as ballads, some contemporary works, and so forth. But lets agree not to disagree, and just enjoy it.

The following articles in this series will deal with the various styles we find in jazz, from ragtime to fusion.

Customer Review: Easily just as good as the first season.
This season has so many great episodes with that classic Home Movies style of humor, that anyone who loved the first season would have no reason not to love this one too. Yes, the animation doesn't "squiggle" anymore but this shouldn't concern anyone thinking about purchasing as it doesn't detract from the show at all.

The answer to this question is yes. However, you need to remember that teaching yourself to play guitar is broken down into two categories. For instance, some people have a natural ability to learn to play instruments. These individuals can listen to a song on the radio, sit down with a guitar, and simply learn. However, the majority of people learn by watching, which is why sales for guitar-learning DVDs are on the rise.

The bottom line is that it is very possible to teach yourself how to play guitar but the key to your success will begin in understanding how you learn. If you are in the first category of being able to hear and then replicate great, but if you need some type of visual aid, you need to consider buying a good DVD for assistance. Remember, using some type of learning aid is not cheating, only enhancing.

If you want to play for personally enjoyment or to entertain friends and family, it is possible to teach yourself how to play guitar but you need to choose the right method. If you have never played before and want to use a DVD or even some type of instructional book or CD, then make sure you choose something geared toward a beginner. On the other hand, if you have some experience but want to build on your current skill, then you need aid that is more advanced.

Many professional guitarists have asked themselves the same question "Is it possible to teach yourself how to play guitar?" For some of these individuals, they have built lucrative careers based on self-taught guitar but some have gone on to take lessons or use a variety of teaching aids. Regardless, going the self-taught way offers a number of benefits in that you can learn to play at your pace but also using a method that works for you.

Just remember, when asking, "Is it possible to teach yourself how to play guitar", be realistic about your natural ability. If you do not have a natural ear for learning, there is nothing wrong with that. Therefore, pay attention to what you have to work with, understanding that we all have different abilities and ways of learning.

In teaching yourself how to play guitar, you also need to be fair to yourself on what you will and will not learn immediately. In other words, if you are expecting that you will sit down and within one hour be playing like Eric Clapton, it will not happen. Even if you have a natural ability for playing the guitar, it is going to take you time and hard work to hone your skill. Instead, you want to enjoy each learning session while not putting too much pressure on yourself to learn.

The bottom line, "Is it possible to teach yourself how to play guitar" - YES but be patient, choose the right type of guitar and music, and if necessary, use any number of quality learning aids now on the market. Before long, you will be playing beautiful music while having the gratification that you did much of the teaching on your own.

I am a fan of many types of music including jazz, rock, dance, blues, bluegrass, classical, world, etc. This is easily one of the top 5 albums ever created, regardless of genre. It is a magical culmination of music, musicians, and timing. If you listen to this (no really, close your eyes and really listen) and are not moved by it, you had better check to see that you still have a heartbeat!

I don't consider my house a home without this album. I seriously put it on repeat. It's one of my favorite to cook and clean to and just leave in the stereo when guests arrive. The DVD of the making of this CD provides a valuable context to what these musicians had been through and make the experience of the album that much more potent for me--I'd recommend the DVD, as well. Ry Cooder does a great job with both.

Surrounded

The hype of 5.1 and huger surround seems more active than ever... except in sales.

Back in the early days of Dolby Digital and DTS I stood up for releasing music in multi-channel formats. I still do.

The thing is just that I do not uphold the "Dolby Digital" or "DTS" 5.1, or 6.1 or whatever approach, it makes little sense to me, speaking in commercial terms, because of the comfort sacrifices it forces you to, when listening to it. Remember you may leave the music playing in the room and listen from the kitchen.

So, I think most people just won't go trough the trouble of buying a music "DVD" just by imagining sitting in the couch while it plays, exploring all the 5.1 surround activity. I speak for myself, having countless high-definition audio surround titles, I *only* listen to these in the former mentioned scenario, thus, rarely.

What do I think should be the way then?

Stereo still rules

No matter how much DVD players get lower in price, or compression algorithms get multichannel, the thing is that... The main thing is still the music, the thing you whistle too, tip the toes at with or get the goosebumps from.

Truth of the matter is that now matter how good people's Home-Cinema systems get, as far as music use is concerned, they will probably just stuff in a quite common normal audio CD in there, or SDCards or whatever.

The immersive surround makes more sense watching a movie or playing a game, not quite so listening to music which, some even just "display" for the neighbors, leaving the room due to very high volume, or dance away from the speakers, and I do mean away - not good for feeling immersive effects the producer wanted his 5.1 music to give you, which means, for that, you should stand in the geometrical center of all 5 or 6, or even 7 (for now) speakers...

... Ah, and have I mentioned that in many cases the speakers are incorrectly placed?

Encoding

So, to me, the solution, as far as investing in music audio production, still lies with the stereo approach as root, and... to add some value, if need be, the surround. Although there are a lot of ways you can do this, I use two (please mind that for HighDefinition content I use MLP and WMA lossless):

- Windows Media Audio Multichannel encoder (or similars) - Dolby Prologic or similars

Sticking to the examples, Windows Media Audio allows you to encode several channels of audio but downmixes to stereo transparently if you are listening in stereo. Dolby Prologic, if version II, encodes a 5(.1) matrix into a stereo file, if IIx, goes up to 7.1, and although the listener may enjoy it in stereo (with the hyped iPod, for example, and headphones) he can also, if in the mood, stuff the source into the Hi-Fi, turning on the suitable ProLogic decoder and getting the full 5(.1) channels from the stereo file or more.

There's some loss of quality doing phase encoding in a stereo file to get the extra surround channels, but, for the reasons stated above, some of which related to the kitchen/room scenario, that difference won't make that much of a difference.

Please notice the ".1" in all the stated cases, which is the sub-bass channel, is handled automatically, hence, removing bass from all channels, it's not a dedicated channel in ProLogic, but may be with Windows Media Audio.

Speaking of 5 channels surround, the problem with Windows Media Surround Encoder (and similars) is that, since they encode the whole channels, the file size is around, lets say, for sake of argument, bigger than a simple stereo would be (prologic is encoded in stereo) - not good for bandwidth (specially in high-quality, high bitrate versions).

On the other hand, if you had a stereo encoded Prologic II file, the size would be the simple stereo normal size, hence, around a few times less if you count off compression tricks, with all the channels there. Good for bandwidth, best for high bit rate encoding with no worries for size, and you can listen in an iPod or at home with your pride and joy home-cinema system in full 5.1, having downloaded a simple, small, ingenious simple stereo file.

Thus means, ProLogic is also good to burn straight on to a normal stereo CD...

My vote

So, you may have guessed it by now, my vote goes for plain stereo with encoded ProLogic information and that is probably my future orientation, if I don't stick with plain stereo - which would be option zero, the original vote, but I like to add value, and multi-channel does just that.

On the other hand, I uphold and defend HD multichannel (24bit/96khz) should be 5.1 in heart, engineered to be so with the highest of qualities, but only to be sold along side the standard material, for true appreciation - I'm not a supporter of compressed high-definition multichannel downloads, I want it all, linear, or, at most, 75% of it (WMA Q75 mode, similar to MiniDisc quality). :-)

The future

I believe the future may very well render effortless many hours of sweat some insist on going through to have a good 5.1 mix (many sound really lousy). The thing is that DSP (digital signal processing) will have such a huge amount of processing power that it will take any audio signal and do whatever it wants with it.

So, from a crappy mono feed, you may end up with a glorious 12.2 surround artificial but realistic environment, and move trough it in real time, as with most games nowadays. So my motto is to focus on music, balance, production, emotion, and stereo, with optional spreading to a well mixed 5.1 (actually it's the reverse, but who cares) for marketing and personal pleasure reasons for, under all this reasoning, monophonic would be enough.
