GORILLAZ - LOOKOUT SOFTIES - T-SHIRT

Tribal belly dance recreates what might have been as far as different tribes and the interaction between them. There is no real evidence as to what really existed but it is understood that tribal belly dance has its roots in folkloric and traditional dance. It has really taken off within the last ten to twenty years.

Tribal Belly Dance is a Western style of Belly Dance derived/fused primarily from the dance/troupe style of Jamila Salimpour in the 70's. This style of dance fuses various folklore and contemporary dance movements, from various countries such as the Middle East. In addition it uses a mix of music, often preferring acoustic instruments, authentic tribal songs or tribal sounding songs. However, recently it has been incorporating a lot of the world trance and beat music.

This intriguing dance is characterized by an improvisational style, with dancers learning sets of steps and moves rather than choreographing entire dances. The dance is also very stress relieving and women often confess that belly dance class is the highlight of their week and that they feel so good when they leave class, not only physically, but mentally as well. Tribal belly dance is a powerful and fun way to express yourself, and share in something truly uplifting with other women.

Its roots are in folkloric and the traditional belly dance. That being said it is considered a recent innovation. It's really taken off within the last ten to twenty years because of the exciting nature of the dance. The visual display of several dancers all performing at once is very compelling and exciting to watch.

Performances are seldom choreographed but rather cued from a vocabulary of movement by a designated lead dancer. This encourages a spirit of team work, awareness and cooperation, all parts of being a "tribe". Performances of this style are quite energetic and exciting to watch. However, a side effect is that dancers who only study this style of dance could potentially be unable to dance without the lead of other tribal improvisational dancers.

Customer Review: great system
I am now on the 3rd and final level of Rosetta Stone's Spanish (Latin America). I have been very impressed with the series. I do also use Pimsleur Spanish CDs in my car to supplement my learning. I'd recommend both to anyone interested in learning any language.
Customer Review: Installation challenges
This version is sold as Vista compatible, however installation was not straight forward with Vista Ultimate as operating system. Once installed there is an error message as the file framedynos.dll is not found. We needed to copy it into the program directory. The activation program does not work with Vista, we needed to disconnect the PC from the internet and activate via phone. Neither of these two problems was listed in the manual. The good thing was that the phone service was available even late in the night. Once these two hurdles were overcome the program seems to be working well.

1. Stop planning everything you do. Sometimes you can have a lot of fun and relax more if you just go with the flow and avoid planning every little detail in your life.

4. Call your family & friends and plan a party or gathering. Keeping in touch with the one's you love is important and can be fun for one to share special moments with.

8. Tell jokes to your friends. Plan a gathering in which all that are invited come up with jokes to share.

9. Plan a fun weekend away. Get out of the house or apartment for the weekend and go somewhere you have always wanted to go to have fun and/or relax at.

10. Go to a concert. If you do not mind large crowds, attend a local concert or buy tickets for a show you know you would like to see live.

11. Be more around people. If you are use to being alone, it is always more fun to be around people, which you can find them pretty much anywhere you go.

12. Play a sport you like. Get your body in shape and have fun doing it. Not only is it good for your health but can also be fun if especially if you do it with someone else.

13. Take a class at a local community college in your area. Community colleges usually offer non-credit courses available for low price to all ages that can be fun and different for you to do.

Customer Review: Menudo Mania!
I am so glad I found this DVD! I am a Menudo fan from way back but grew up in the Midwest. Not much Menudo merchandise was available so at this time in my life I am playing catch up. This DVD IS a must, must have for any Menudo fan. I would even suggest it to fans of Ricky Martin who discovered him after he left the group...especially those who discovered him after the Grammys. If you never had a chance to see this group in concert, buy this DVD! Seeing Ricky Martin at age 14 is like going down memory lane. Its amazing seeing the stage presence and star power he had at such a young age. It become obvious that he was a super star in the making and just the cutest thing on the planet! Its also interesting seeing Robby Rosa (now going by Draco Rosa, singer/songwriter/producer) back then. You could see that he was a talented artist in the making as well. Its also amazing to see how much he has changed since the 80's. This concert DVD is fun and it will put a smile on your face from begining to end!
Customer Review: Menudo Mania!
I always hear people go on and on and on about The Beatles, but let's face it - they were no Menudo!

Music Within is a film based on the true life story of Richard Pimentel, the man who created the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pimentel becomes deaf after a bombing in the Vietnam War. When he comes home, two influential things happen: he is told he can't enter college; and he meets Art Honeyman, a man with cerebral palsy. Pimentel finds his calling in life: to help those with disabilities get jobs and be accepted by the general public.

Fans of uplifting, touching stories will love this film. Anyone who knows someone who is disabled (which is pretty much everyone) can appreciate what Pimentel was able to do with his life's work.

I particularly liked Pimentel's wit and humor portrayed in the film. After watching the featurettes of Pimentel's speeches, I found that many of the film's great lines of dialogue came directly from the man himself. I also loved Art's character with his undeniable charm.

This film made me want to change the world. It's films like this that give me hope in humanity, that drive me to keep that hope. It made me believe in the good in humanity.

The cast of this film is incredible! The acting is superb. Ron Livingston was a delightful surprise for the lead role, and he does very well in portraying the talented and humorous public speaker. If you see the actor who portrayed Art Honeyman (Michael Sheen) speak, you'll be amazed at how different he is from the character he played. Not only does he portray very accurately a man with cerebral palsy, but he manages to capture Honeyman's sharp wit and humor perfectly.

The special features of the DVD include several deleted scenes, a "making of" featurette and clips from a speech given by Richard Pimentel as he relates the major events of the film. At 94 minutes, the film does feel a little short compared to most films made these days, but it does well to present this amazing story to its viewers.

I think everyone can benefit from watching this film. I believe it will inspire many to fight for their own causes and to perhaps view the disabled in a new light.

My husband and I saw the trailer for this film while watching another DVD. The trailer alone affected us like no other. We knew we had to see this film as soon as possible. We just knew we would love it, and we did. The extras on this film are excellent glimpses behind the scenes and into the real story behind the dramatization.

Karaoke MTV Latin Pop Music CD+G 2-Pack CD Volume 1 & 2

Remakes of some of the most popular Latin Pop hits have been compiled on an energetic two CD+Graphics set for karaoke fans to enjoy. Though it's geared for the teen set, grownups will undoubtedly join in when they hear these tunes and see accompanying lyrics for each track on their TV screens. It's easy, instant fun for future American idols of any age. There are two versions of each song: with and without vocals. All songs are professional re-creations and not sung by the original artists.
Customer Review: parental advisory
I bought this for my 8 year old daughter, assuming that because it was geared towards kids, it would be appropriate. I was disappointed to see that these cds had a parental advisory: "Explicit lyrics" sticker on them. It did not say this in the product description. I will be returning this item.
Customer Review: Karaoke CD review
I like this, because i love to sing. It educates you in music and is a lot of fun to do with your friends. Its not very durable though, but how many CDs are???

Downloading music is an everyday affair on the internet. Almost unlimited music downloads of the latest songs take place each and every hour online. People have gotten so used to downloading music since it is so easy to do it with todays web technology. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can search and find your favourite song to download. There are a dozen of online music stores that are packed with unlimited music downloads. Each site allows you to download as many music pieces as you wish for a monthly subscription. Recently, this has gotten even more exciting with new entrants that do away with monthly subscriptions and go for a one-time fee only. We will explore some of the options available for us to get unlimited music downloads.

Unlimited music downloads across multi-genres are offered at several music stores for music lovers like us to enjoy without spending massive fortunes. Here are a few excellent and popular stores that offer this kind of service to you for a reasonable rate.

1. AOL Music Now

With a library of approximately 2 million music files including songs and soundtracks, it is unlike many other sites that offer unlimited music downloads. It is a direct access site that allows instant downloading of music without having to download and install client application on your computer before you can download your music. For an extra $5 every month, you get to download unlimited music downloads onto your digital portable player.

2. Napster

The new Napster has revamped itself ever since the previous saga. But with this download site, you need to install special proprietary software on your computer in order to be able to download songs from its website. Up to this point, it is estimated to carry about 1 million songs in its database. Its To Go service allows you to download approximately 9 out of 10 songs in the database.

3. Rhapsody

One of the most established music stores that is still around after all these years. It has seen the years of changes in the music industry and how online media has gained its foothold today. Ukulele is a great instrument to use when you play chords to songs. Your chord playing on your ukulele can be more effective if you apply a few guitar playing principles. In this ukulele lesson you will find out how you can change between chords better and easier!

First a few easy to follow principles as you play any chord:

1. Fingerings. The left hand fingers you use as you play chords can make chord changes easier or harder.

2. Minimize finger movements. Try to take the shortest distance between two frets if you have to move a finger to change chords.

3. Keep fingers down on frets that are shared between two chords.

Let us take a closer look at these principles:

Fingerings

As an example of the first principle we will take a look at two common ukulele chords. We will use the common C-tuning. In this tuning the C-major chord will look like this:

C-major: 04 03 02 31

The number pairs tell you how to put your fingers to play the chord. The first number in the pair tells you which fret to press down and the next number which string to play. The number 0 means that you will not press down any fret. For example 04 means play the fourth open string. The number pair 31 tells you to press down the third fret on the first string.

The strings are numbered from the string with the highest pitch. This string is called the first string and is the bottom string when you play your ukulele.

In the C-major chord written out above you can see that there is only one fret to press down. This makes for many fingering alternatives. The easiest way to finger this C-chord is of course to use your index finger. But let us look at the next chord to play, G7, to see if there is another way to finger the C-chord. Here is the G7 chord:

G7: 04 23 12 21

The most common fingering for this chord is using the ring finger for the first string, the index finger for the second string and the middle finger for the third string. Try it out and see if it is this way you have played it.

A common chord progression is to move from C-major to G7. In order to make this chord change as smooth as possible I suggest that you use your ring finger to play the third fret on the first string in the C-major chord. When you move to G7 you simply slide your ring finger to the second fret and add the remaining two fingers and you have the G7 chord.

If you are going from G7 to C you only have to reverse the procedure.

Minimize finger movements

As an example of this principle we will use the chords A-minor and and F-major. Here you have these chords written out:

A-minor: 24 03 02 01

F-minor: 24 03 12 01

Suppose you have to move from Am to F. As you can see there is only one change to make between Am and F. The only thing to do is to put your index finger on the first fret on the second string and you will have the F chord. To make this chord change as smooth as possible you can keep your index finger as close as possible to this fret even when you play Am. This principle applies to other chord changes as well.

Keep fingers down on frets that are shared

In order to illustrate this principle we will use the chords F-major and G7. I have already showed the chords above so I just have to describe how to move your fingers. If you take a look at the two chords you will find that the first fret second string is shared by both chords. This fret is pressed down with your index finger.

As you move from F to G7 you only have to move your middle finger from fret two on the fourth string to fret two on the third string and press down fret two on string one with your ring finger and you are done!

Using the chords and principles we have already discussed you can practice the following sequence that is very common in many songs:

C Am F G7 C Am ...and so on.

How to practice

The best way to practice chord changes in a song is to take two consecutive chords and practice them by strumming once on every chord as you move between them. Slowly at first, making it possible to apply the principles we have discussed. In a short time you will find that you automatically will use the right fingerings, minimize finger movements and you will also find that your playing will be more effective and enjoyable!

Honeymoon is a very special occasion, and its proper planning can give you unforgettable moments in life.
You can decide your honeymoon place with your partner. When both of you have similar interests, you are likely to choose a common place, and that will be great.

You can choose a cruise for a perfect honeymoon. Now-a-days, most of the cruises provide honeymoon packages for newly wedded couples. A five-day journey on the cruise can be good enough.

If you or your partner likes sports, you can head for some suitable place that is full of sport. Arizona will be a very good option in such a case. You can enjoy the day playing games with your partner. A romantic dinner at the end of the day will make the tour unforgettable.

It is not necessary to choose a very expensive place for a honeymoon. All that matters is how creative you are, and how good you are at making moments quite romantic.

Arranging a candle light dinner at the roof of your place or in your own room can do magic. You can play light music at night in your room, dance to the music with your partner, and initiate a romantic conversation with him or her. The main idea is to please your partner with your creativity, and make him or her feel special through your actions.

All that matters in a honeymoon is how you make every moment beautiful. Instead of spending a lot of money on expensive tours, you can go to any beautiful and romantic place that suits your budget, and create unforgettable moments.

As I sat on the edge of my chair at the Huemann Bookstore in Harlem, peering into the eyes of film legend Melvin Van Peebles, it was hard for me to fathom the lack of promotional fanfare. I could not understand why Mr. Peebles, as so many other legends, are infrequently receiving the accolades for breaking into Hollywood, theater and or music. Mr.Peebles sat in the bookstore without major paparozzi, and spoke to me and several other reporters, producers and scholars, as well as aspiring writers and children, on the systematic approaches he needed to break into Hollywood. Amidst the systemic racism, stereotypical roles, and lack of technical assets Mr. Peebles moved to Europe and eloquently informs of his causasian comrades that have assisted him along the way. Mr. Peebles spoke of the power of unity in the community prior to integration, and how not having come from a culture that promotes unity, for individualism is an American tradition and that we as a people were critically effected by racism. He explained the lack of cohesiveness. He spoke of being able to use the passport to avoid the radical, and powerful tools corporate America uses to stagnate your growth. It was a learned experience and I am prompted to have you, the reader, research all that you can on the life and works of this genius. I use Melvin Peebles as an example of great African-Americans that are pioneers in the film industry, and whose art and style set the trends for action packed movies. His association with Stax records led to the making of some of the greatest soundtracks of the 1960's and '70s.

Melvin Van Peebles confirms African Americans have set the cultural standard of music. He says that with film the larger movie houses continue to utilize Black recording artists to sell their movies. As he said, now a days, movies are just long soundtracks. Sometimes people go to a movie because of the sound track.

The legacy of Melvin Van peebles, filmmaker, writer, pioneer, is like the instruction manual for independent filmmakers. I am urged to advise all artists, music lovers, writers and filmmakers to study his works, his films, and to learn from the hardship and success stories.

Being a lover of film and music it was not very hard to choose both genre's as my column's topic. It is vital for us to continue to observe, praise and document the many contributions Blacks continue to make in this country and the world.

All things new are old:

As of late, many corporations, media houses, and universities, are attempting to document the contributions that have been made in hiphop. Although there have been many great innovative artists that have been promoted in the mainstream, there still is a decade of artists that go almost unnoticed. I remember when lawyers, librarians, record labels and mass media thought disco would be the music that would be forever. I observed the music scene at a very early age. My father's cousin, Fats Lewis and Bobby Robinson owned Fury and Enjoy records. In the early sixties Gladys Knight and Pips graced their label. Later in the mid seventies Bobby promoted rappers. I was influenced by music from that era but it was my Grandmother, who sang gospel everyday, that exposed me to music. My uncle Al Eford wanted a club and he decided to take on the task of running a club, which became 22 West 135th Sstreet. So of course the family worked there, and I sold tickets for any party my mother and aunts gave. From promoting 22 West and going to parties at Harlem World, Harlem Prep and the Celebrity Club and Renaissance Ballroom I met a lot of Djs. My experience with living in Manhattan and the Bronx, partying in the centers, parks, fire escapes, roofs, led to my love of aerial views and prompted me to get into video at an early age. I still wrote poems and news articles on a freelance basis with the Amsterdam News and other small tabloids when I got older. I still, however, loved music and thus learned how to produce my own songs and worked with young producers like Strafe, Toney Woods (New Jack Swing/Teddy Riley's producer) Donald D, Pumpkin King of the Beats (PBUH) and Paris Ford (7 Minutes of funk) Michael B and Richie Weeks (Weeks and co). Then later Barry B (Get Fresh Crew). I learned to respect the innovators who also had been influenced by the legends of rap and r&B and of course funk.

Although music was a passion, I rarely witnessed women on tv being promoted or promoting rap on a positive level, or even allowing new rappers to speak to the public and see a more intelligent side. I observed that women on tv were promoted as hookers or emasculate. So I decided to get into tv production and public access was a vehicle.

Moments in Hiphop are vignettes of the talk shows that I hosted/produced. It shows a side of many artists who may have set trends and who have had an opportunity to influence the sculpture of the ever evolving hip-hop culture.

We as producers, artists, poets, actors, filmmakers, writers, painters, dancers, djs, are the creative force that shape the world. We are the true innovators and it is only genius when we learn from history how to identify the new to preserve our HISTORIES...

We must be the authors of the dictionaries that define our works. All too often creative individuals do not receive the proper acknowledgments for their contributions, because somewhere in this generation, someone decided that when you are too old you are not important. Remember it was the elders that gives the knowledge to the young who are to manifest what is learned. It is up to us to tell Our story. When DJ Yoda spoke of a plan to preserve the hiphop culture with pioneers in the industry, I referred him to the necessary grant writing agency that could do the job in raising funds for his tasks.

History tells me that it is important because it can repeat itself. As the scholar Professor James wrote in his expose' Stolen Legacy, "if it remains to be seen if we are beyond typical historical responses to challenging ideas and if we only had original documentation. We must keep in mind the burning of the Egyptian and Ethiopian Libraries, the sacking of Timbuktu, the Inquisition and the many book burnings in history".

Intros, Endings and Turnarounds for Keyboard: Essential Phrases for Swing, Latin, Jazz Waltz, and Blues Styles

Learn the intros, endings and turnarounds that all of the pros know and use! This new keyboard instruction book by John Valerio covers swing styles, ballads, Latin tunes, jazz waltzes, blues, major and minor keys, vamps and pedal tones, and more.
Customer Review: This book is fun ...
The book has well written, very musical phrases. The author suggests usage with several standards that should be in everyone's play book and it's fun to work them in with tunes you already know - in the proper keys. Take them apart, and there is something to learn in most of them. Great for browsing. The printing is good and the binding isn't troublesome on the rack. Nice experience. I would have rated it a five, but some of the pages have a tendency to work loose.
Customer Review: I love this book
I try to spend a half hour with it every night. This book will appeal to a wide range of interests. Whether you are a composer interested in theory, or a keyboardist enhancing your chops, there is something here for you. Most examples are four-measures long, but rich in musicality (kind of like what the Bach chorales are for those studying classical music.) The examples progress from simple chord progressions to more complex, and each is one is clearly explained. Nice melodies too! It is apparent that the author has spent a lot of time with each of the sub-genres (swing, ballads, blues, Latin, etc.) and has distilled his knowledge into a neat recipe book that will serve as a launching point for those wishing to further their expertise.

Are CDs still a sound investment?

There was once a time that the first milestone in a band's career was pressing a CD. There was always something special about the perfectly shrink- wrapped plastic case, the look of promise contained within the albums cover, and the power of a barcode branded in black and white on the tray card. For most, having a professionally pressed disc was like a signal that they've arrived and are proudly showing the world their art. While many still gauge their musical success in the culmination of a packed CD, the allure of digital downloads has caused many to question the need for CD Duplication in the future.

Ease of Use

Digital downloads, most commonly offered in the popular mp3 format, have quickly become a favorite of many music fans due to their easy transferability and lower cost. Mp3s use a process called psychoacoustic masking to compress a standard audio file into a smaller file size with very little if any audible quality loss ( mp3 vs CD quality test). This technology allowed artists to offer high-quality renderings of their music directly to fans through online stores like iTunes or directly from their website. Because the band no longer had to front the manufacturing cost of the audio CD duplication or music CD duplication , they are usually able to offer their music at a low price than that of a standard compact disc.

The Physiological Factor

While, mp3 technology can be beneficial to both the artist and the consumer, there are some disadvantages to purchasing music in a digital format. Aside from the loss of certain frequencies, mp3s typically live on a computer or portable listening device, which can be susceptible to data loss and system failure. Because of copyright concerns, music lost in computer crashes cannot be recovered without paying for all your songs again. For users that don't back up their data, there is a substantial risk of losing your entire music collection and ultimately your investment.

Also, many music fans still like the feeling of holding a tangible product in their hands. For them reading a CD booklet, and the physiological experience of holding a piece of the artist's work is an important experience. These same fans are probably also likely to purchase merchandise at an artist's performance or show. Since mp3s are a downloadable format, artist's who opt for mp3 only releases may loose out on a percentage of sales and impulse buyers who want to take home souvenirs of their concert.

Consumer Options

With no shortage of compelling arguments for both formats, the only thing that is certain is that technology is giving both musicians and fans a broader range of options. Because selling mp3s through digital distribution websites cost no additional money, bands can manufacture standard CDs for those who prefer owning discs, and output high-quality mp3s for fans satisfied with lower priced downloads. In order to reach all of your target audience, it makes the most sense to provide as many buyer options as possible to maximize your potential market and ultimately album sales.

Many parents worry about the amount of time that their children spend playing video games, and in particular, that their children are not getting enough exercise. Well, it could well be that their worries and concerns are over, with the increasing popularity of video games and peripherals which actively encourage physical exercise.

Recently there has been an increase in demand from children and young teenagers for dance mats. These are interactive mats which have built in sensors, the idea being that the players have to move, dance, jog, jump and twist to music, accomplishing as many moves as quickly as possible, and following set dances. This puts them in direct competition with their friends, and of course, they spend a great deal of time jumping, twisting and being energetic. Some people would argue that getting exercise in this way is better for their health than going out on the streets, cycling along busy roads or going off to parks, where they meet with all sorts of risks and dangers.

In addition to dance mats, Nintendo has very recently launched a new sports peripheral, that acts as a baseboard - not dissimilar to a small surfboard. By balancing on this, a number of activities can be carried out - from basic stepping, to surfing and snowboarding, and even yoga. The massive number of incredibly sensitive sensors built into the board mean that the computer can detect the balance, pressure and movement of a player, and either replicate that using a three dimensional avatar on the screen, or provide feedback or an assessment on the level of skill, level of fitness or level of ability at a particular activity.

Again, children have a natural competitiveness in them, and this can be against themselves as much as against their friends. Often these days schools are not keen to engage children in competitive sports, and many schools have actively opted out of teaching competitive activities in the curriculum. However, children do have a natural need to try to be better, either than their past performance or against someone else - and whether that is a friend or a computer generated avatar doesn't always matter. Getting physical exercise in this way means that not only are your children getting a good dose of healthy exertion, but very often they are being taught how to improve their skills, and carry out warming exercises and techniques to help them.

Clearly computers are unlikely to replace the fresh air and benefits of going outdoors and running around on a sports field, or cycling through the countryside, but we also have to be realistic and accept that, whilst these activities might well have been possible and safe a generation or two ago, children are at far greater risk today, and so one way in which they can be helped is to use these games which provide them with fun and entertainment, as well as exercise.

As with all things - the key is striking a reasonable balance between types of exercise, and types of games.

"Without music, life would be a mistake" is a famous old saying. However, without the great musicians there is no great music. Those who are really interested in live concerts would have come across the names Tom Petty, Kanye West, Kenny Chesney, and Jimmy Buffett. They are the real music legends. Spare a little time to reading on, to know more about these legends.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Tom Petty will be familiar as a singer, song writer, and a guitarist to those who love heartland rock music. The songs like "Don't Do Me Like That", "Refugee", "Runnin' Down a Dream", "The Waiting", "Don't Come Around Here No More", "I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin'", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "American Girl", "Learning to Fly" and "You Don't Know How It Feels", are heavily played hit singles by Tom Petty which act as medicines for broken hearts. Born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, USA, Tom was very much interested in rock and roll music early at the age of 11 when he met Elvis Presley. He began his recording career with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the band's 1976 debut album, which was initially unpopular in the United States. Their second album, You're Gonna Get It! marked the band's first Top 40 album.

Kanye West

Kanye West, who is one of the great American rap artists and a hip hop producer, released his debut album "The College Dropout" in 2004. His recent, third album being "Graduation" was released in 2007. All his albums received lots of awards (including nine Grammys). Kanye West who was born in Atlanta, Georgia was involved in a near car crash fatal in 2002 while driving home from the recording studio. The crash provided inspiration for West's first single, "Through the Wire". Kanye also won the 'best new artist' award in 2004.

Kenny Chesney

Everyone who loves to hear music of country genre would have come across the name 'Kenny Chesney'. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Chesney has recorded thirteen albums, eleven of which have been certified gold or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America. 'I will Stand' Chesney's third album for BNA, was released in 1997. "She's Got It All", which served as the album's lead-off single, became Chesney's first Billboard Number One single, spending three weeks at the top of the country charts.. Yet another enthusiastic artist in the globe!

Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffet, the 62 year old businessman is also a successful singer and a song writer. His band is known as "the Coral Reefer Band". He has also produced movies recently including hits such as "Margaritaville". Buffett began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee during the late 1960s as a country artist and recorded his first album, the folk rock Down to Earth, in 1970. Jimmy Buffett has released over 30 albums, as of October, 2007. In 2007 Buffett received the CMA Event of the Year Award for his song "Hey Good Looking" which featured Alan Jackson and George Strait.

Can you remember the first time you ever saw belly dancing? Oh, I can and with my six year old eyes and mind I knew that this dance would definitely change my life forever. It took me awhile but by my early twenties I was starting on my path towards becoming a belly dancer. As a newcomer, belly dancing took over my days, nights and dreams. Than the day came when it was time to show my community what I had learned. That day was the first encounter I had with a very unusual and interesting foe. There are many of you reading this that will never forget your first performance. And I know there are many of you who can never forget your first encounter with "Stage Fright".

Stage Fright is very clever. It sneaks up on you just before you get on stage or you may wake up on the morning of your performance feeling like you shouldn't get out of bed. It is amazing how Stage Fright affects the body. My bladder turns into the size of a pea but only for that night. My heart is either trying to jump out of my throat or drop to my knees. Than my palms get sweaty and I feel like I need to take a nap all at the same time. And let's not forget the occasional break out. I can remember I was dancing for an anniversary party at a restaurant I use to perform at. I woke up the morning of the performance with this huge bump in the middle of my forehead. It wasn't there the day before and I took extra measures to make sure my skin was clear. You guessed it; Stage Fright had something to do with it. So what did I do? All I can say is thank God for bindis!

Stage Fright overloads the brain with images that really aren't there. The stage can either become larger or smaller depending on what false images Stage Fright creates in your brain. And the number one false image is the unfriendly audience. I have left the stage thinking the audience didn't like me only to find out afterwards that I was well received. I've experienced performances where I was ahead of my music. Did Stage Fright convince my music to slow down on me? Your guess is as good as mine. I know that Stage Fright has convinced my props to act up during past performances. And Stage Fright has convinced my memory to leave and not to come back until I finished my performance. Stage fright will whisper in your ear that the entire theater is watching you and that the audience knows you just messed up your choreography. And there have been a few times when I went deaf and didn't hear the audience applause at all. Actually I should say my hearing and memory went out the window together. And the one way to know if a dancer is experiencing Stage Fright is to see the look on her face that resembles a "deer caught in the headlights". If you see this look, do your best to support her and let her know she's doing a great.

So here are a few tips my friends and I came up with to help dancers overcome such a calculating adversary:

    1. Laugh with friends and think of whatever makes you happy.
There is no failure in performing because if you don't go out on stage, you will never know what it feels like to be in front of an audience. People will always appreciate your efforts!
    2. Have family and friends in the front row to cheer you on. My Dad makes funny faces and he always makes me laugh.
    3. Know your music like the back of your hand. Even if you forget your choreography the music will be very familiar to you.
    4. Go over your choreography the morning of your performance and try to keep it fresh in your mind. I will usually listen to my music on the drive to wherever I am performing. It helps jazz me up and sometimes I'll come up with some interesting moves in my head. (Be careful of the belly dancer pedal to the metal groove!)
    5. Remember to practice your performance with your costume on. I have danced with a skirt that could fit a whole circus in it. 6. Remember to look in the mirror just before you go on stage and smile at the beautiful dancer looking back at you. (Plus it doesn't hurt to check to see if lipstick is on your teeth!)
    7. The stage really is our friend. Know the length and width of any space you are performing at.
    8. When we perform together we are part of an amazing team so know you have support and back up on the side lines. You are not alone!!
    9. A good meditation or prayer will always put a heart or soul at ease. Group prayer can really give you the boost you need and send Stage Fright running!
    10. Last but not least is Stage Frights final illusion which is the expectation of standing ovations and a movie deal your first time performing. Granted not all of you may have fallen for this but there was a part of me that saw stars, literally and figuratively.

If Stage Fright does creep in every once in awhile just remember to laugh. Some of the best memories I have with performing are my goofiest moments. And when I'm in my rocking chair remembering my dance career I want to be smiling from ear to ear (even if I have no teeth).

Blessings,

Leyla Naj

Thanks to the internet and high speed Internet connection in most households today, it is just natural that most of us can download full version movies from the comfort of our own home.

Past are the days that we needed to go out to the local DVD store to buy or rent a DVD when we can just simply open our computer and download full version movies right off the Internet.

There are huge advantages and disadvantages when it comes to using the internet as a free source.

The advantages are obvious.
The Variety and the freedom to choose our full version movie downloads are almost endless.
Just Google download full version movies and you will get 82,500,000!!! (To date) WebPages, many of them offer to download full version movies for free.

The disadvantage is that the amount of offers you are presented with could be overwhelming. Like going into a huge toy store and try to decide which toy you want to buy.
That wouldn't be so bad, especially when you are presented with so many free offers. "Toys you can get for free".... BUT all that "free" stuff offered across the net could be very dangerous for your computer's safety.
Downloads from an unknown sources could carry viruses and spyware that could attack your computer and cause great damage.

Another issue that must be addressed and to many of us ignore is the violation of copyright laws.
There are quite a few online movie download sites that permit you to download free full version movies but they are illegal. It is of outmost importance to only download copyright free and piracy free movies.

To enjoy all the current, high quality full version movies downloads I highly recommend signing up for the credited and well established Paid Online Movie Sites.
Yes, its not free, but for a one time membership fee which is about 45$ - 50$ you can download unlimited full version movies including the most current ones as well as get full access to all their archives of games and music all legal.

Checking various free movie download sites I also found the movies to be of low quality and in many cases the download speed was very slow.
Paid movie download sites, on the other hand, offer superb quality movies and the download speed is much faster.

If you want to download full version movies I highly recommend paid movie download sites.

Pick from huge selection for Downloading of Full Version Movies. Visit Top Recommended download sites. Safe instant access to Latest Movie Downloads

One of the more striking aspects of the Beijing Opera is the Masks and Facial Make-up used to portray the various characters in a production. The use of symbolic colors, stylized lines, and fantastical facial exaggeration all serve the performance magic and grandeur. There is really nothing that compares to a skillful and artistic rendition of one of China's favorite stories from historical events and classical literature.

The current Beijing Opera originated from a combination of several sources. In 1790, the four great theatre groups from Anhui came to perform for the Royal Family. They used the traditional melodies and aria called Xi Pi. Around 1828, performers from Hubei joined them to form a combined troupe adding their own music called Er Huang. Thousands of pieces were performed regaling great tales of historic events and popular literature as well as their own versions of Western stories.

There have been scholarly discussions concerning the origins of Chinese theatrical mask wearing and face painting. A widely held theory is that face painting developed from the dances called " Lanlingwang (Prince Lanling)" from the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907).

Another possible origin of this practice is rooted in the ancient use of Masks and Make-up in religious ceremonies, particularly exorcisms. There are examples of artwork that show shamans and other actors with stylized painted faces. Upon closer examination, these look very much like the early used of face painting and mask wearing in the Chinese opera theatre.

There is an old saying from the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties that was, "Shentou guimian", or "masks for Gods, make-up for ghosts." It meant that to play a god you must wear a mask, but to play a ghost all you needed was to slap some paint on your face. This followed the idea that gods were sacred and it would be sacrilegious, perhaps even dangerous, to portray them, whereas ghosts, the embodiment of disease, poverty and evil were not subject to such respect. Craftsmen who carved Deity masks believed that as soon as the eyes were carved out of a piece of art, it then became animated with the spirit of the gods.

Over time, actors began to think that it was less a sin to portray gods and spirits on the stage instead of in temples and palaces. They started to favor make-up over the stoic solid masks in performance. This allowed for more expression over the "dead face" of a mask to the "live face" of paints and dyes.

For the longest time, performers took great liberty in their choice of paint methods and colors. Later, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) did there become some conventions and standards. An agency called Shengpingshu (Shengping Agency) was in charge of the affairs of opera performance. They established painting of more than 200 of the current operas with detailed instructions on the character make-up patterns. This became the official standard for face painting.

There are four basic categories of characters in the standard Beijing Opera.

SHENG - Male roles

DAN - Female Roles

CHOU - Comedy roles

JING - Painted face males

Jing, usually males, are the roles with facial painting representing warriors, heroes, statesmen, adventurers, and demons. Jing are found in three basic categories: Zhengjing, Fujing, and Wujing.

The JING roles are more known for courage and resourcefulness than for intelligence. Sometimes a High-ranking General or Warrior/General they usually have a swagger and great self-assurance. There are many common color schemes associated with Jing roles but some have more convention and are easily recognizable.

The compositions of face painting are classified into several patterns based on the belief that a person's face can reveal much about their personality. The overall designs of the face painting are given names like, "three-tiles face", "six-tenths face", "cross face", "slant face", "butterfly face" as well as many, many others.

The colors used on a Jing actors face have symbolic meaning.

RED - Good character, heroic

WHITE - Sneaky and treacherous

GREEN - Rash, lacking self-control

BLACK - Brusque character

BLUE - Wild nature, a robber or thief

GOLD/SILVER - Used only for Gods and Spirits

There are two main types of facial decorations in Chinese Opera: Masks and Facial Painting. Sometimes there are many changes of masks and make-up (even some without the audience's knowledge), this is called Changing Faces. It is a difficult technique that is only mastered after many years of serious and extensive training. This is sometimes used to display the feelings of a character or change the energy of the particular scene. Facial changes for sudden emotional changes are usually done in four ways:

BLOWING DUST - The actor blows black dust concealed in his palm so that it blows back into his face.

MANIPULATING BEARD - Beard colors can be changed while the beard is being moved from black to gray to white showing anger or excitement.

PULLING DOWN MASKS - The actor can pull down a mask that has been sitting on top of his head to communicate a special emotional change.

MOP - The actor mops out the greasepaint hidden in his sideburns or eyebrows to change his facial appearance.

The colorful and flamboyant Jing characters of Beijing Opera theatre with the Beijing Opera Mask as well as facial make-up are enduring part of this very exquisite and beautiful art form. Audiences around the world marvel at the technical virtuosity as well as the austerity of the productions in this symbolic Chinese cultural event.

People usually have some goal or dream that inspires them to take up a musical instrument. But after the initial excitement, its not uncommon to give up, many decide its too difficult, theyre too busy- and whilst theyd still really love to be able to play well, they get stuck in a rut without making progress.

The fact is, mastering a musical instrument is difficult. But its not too difficult for anybody. To succeed, you will need to build your skills in self- control, discipline and determination. Achieving your goals in learning piano or keyboard isnt impossible. If you started out with good intentions that have now fallen by the way-side, read on to discover how to make a fresh start.

Accept you wont become an instant virtuoso

I dont think anyone is a born natural piano or keyboard player. One of the skills to develop as a good player is to make the music appear effortless and natural. But if you think about it, playing an instrument is a pretty unnatural thing to do. We werent designed to do it. And reading music requires uses different parts of the brain to other activities.

If you think you can be really good after just a few weeks of playing, then you will be disappointed and disillusioned very quickly. From the outset, accept that you are going to have to work at many different skills. Realise that at whatever stage you are at, you can always improve. I think this is one of the beauties of learning music everyone is always learning and improving.

Use your current burst of enthusiasm to set you on the right path

If your reading this, youve probably resolved to improve your keyboard playing and practice more. When you finish your internet research, youll most likely feel motivated, resolve to pull yourself together and go and practice for three hours.

But tomorrow, you wont feel so motivated, youll realise your marathon practice session made no difference and youll have about a million more important things to do anyway.

Rather than repeating this cycle again and again, use todays drive and enthusiasm, to make it easier to achieve your goals over a long period of time. Set things up for when you dont feel quite so motivated.

First of all, decide what you really want to ultimately achieve, so that your efforts are focused. Then plan how you can achieve this. Find and book lessons with a teacher, if you havent done so already. Doing this today will commit you to weekly lessons where youll be given you something to work for. Youll also have someone else to monitor your progress.

Next, rearrange the room where you keep your keyboard or piano. Identify any problems with its current location which may be providing an excuse to stop practicing. Perhaps its in the same room as the television or something that causes distraction. Can it be moved? Maybe your practicing disturbs other members of your household. If you have an electronic keyboard or digital piano go out and buy some headphones. Maybe your piano is covered in clutter and junk, sort it out so you can easily get to it and practice. Check that your stool is suitable and not causing you back pain. Make sure you have all the sheet music you need to hand, and organise it so you can easily find what you need.

Identify anything thats going to make it difficult to practice and eliminate it, so you can begin your practice sessions in ease and comfort everyday. This will be more productive than sitting down right now and playing your way to exhaustion.

Build up to good practice habits

The final task for today to plan when youre going to practice. Dont plan too much because youll never stick to it. Start small. Practice in short manageable chunks which you can then build on. Why not try practicing in the advert breaks of the TV shows you watch in the evening- so you only practice for three minutes at a time. You can fit short exercises into this time slot, and you wont be sacrificing anything else. Once you can manage this, then you could try scheduling 10 minute slots during the day.

Practicing in lots of little sessions is usually more effective than sitting down for an hour a day. Also, youll find if you play more often, then youll probably end up getting carried away and practice for longer anyway. Its better motivation for yourself if you aim to play for 5 minutes and actually do 7, then if you schedule 30 minutes but never get round to it at all.

Accept there are no real short cuts. Be prepared for some hard work.

Some times, you will need to keep practicing certain things over and over. Theres just no way round it. If your prepared for this from the outset, then you will be entering your challenge with the right frame of mind. Sometimes things will be time consuming, but simply knuckling down and getting through it will pay off in the long run.

This is different to practicing things with no real thought. If you are working on a piece, identify sections that need the most work. Try not to over practice things that your already good at. If you keep your practice sessions focused, you will achieve much more.

Keep your goals clear- persevere at them.

To stay focused, make sure you are clear about why you wanted to learn keyboard or piano in the first place. What were your goals? To be able to play your favourite song well? To write songs and have a top- ten hit? To play carols with your family at Christmas? To pass grade five? To be in a position to help your children with their music studies? Whatever motivated you initially, dont forget it.

How about making a sign with your music goals written on it and keeping it on top of your piano? That way, youll be reminded of your motivation every time you walk past it. If youve lost sight of what you wanted to achieve, youll find it difficult to get out of your rut.

If you keep focused on your goal and persistently work towards it, you will eventually achieve it.

Sonido Amazonico!

Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor the Incas distilled in the days before The Conquest, and the word's mysterious, boozy etymology makes it perfect for the musical style that bears its name. Chicha - the music - was spontaneously distilled during the culture clash of the '60s when the Indian population of the Peruvian Amazon blended Columbian cumbias with American rock & roll, particularly the twang heavy sound of surf music. With cheap electric instruments, Amazon Indians used the syncopated beat of cumbia as the foundation for melodies that sound to western ears like Andean folk music played on electric guitar supported by Tex-Mex style Farfisa. When the Indians moved to Lima, chicha became a thriving subgenre, but since the 70s the style has been dying out. Olivier Conan, owner of New York's Barbés nightclub and record label, discovered the music on a 2005 trip to Peru. In 2007, he put out a compilation called The Roots of Chicha. The music so captivated New York's downtown crowd that he put together Chicha Libre, a combo comprised of New York's musical scene makers, and started playing the old hits, and some new compositions, to packed houses. Part of the charm of the old chicha recordings had to do with their distorted, lo-fi approach, something that you can't match in a Manhattan recording studio. Nonetheless, Sonido Amazonico!, named after a hit by the chicha band Los Mirlos, is a sunny, upbeat collection guaranteed to bring a silly smile to your face. Vincent Douglas' plays a twangy guitar and Josh Camp plays a rare Hohner Electravox, an accordion-like instrument that sounds like a 70s Farfisa, anchor the band's timeless sound (the Electrovox is an electric hybrid; no air passes through it).

Like reggae, the chicha groove is so recognizable, and flexible, that almost any style of music can be played using it. The playing here has a lightness and humor that the originals lacked, but Chicha Libre's not making any claims about being authentic or keeping a lost tradition alive. They're playing it for kicks, and they supply plenty of 'em. ~ j. poet, All Music Guide

Hello Dr. Kavokin,

I was reading some of your literature and found it to be quite informative. I have a question that perhaps you may be able to answer: If a woman's ovarian cyst ruptures, (especially multiple cysts from PCOS) can these ruptured cysts become an infection?

Hi, MS. L

Short answer: anything can become infected. Though I do no think ruptured ovarian cyst becomes infected very often, did not hear about that. I will look more literature and probably place the answer on my website.

Sincerely,

Alex

OK. I looked the literature.

I didn't do very extensive literature search. Should admit.
Anyway, some available books mention that ovarian cyst may become infected. However the infection is not described as the main complication in ovarian cyst rupture.

Also, I don't remember that anybody told me otherwise. Maybe there is some specialized article that says: the condition happens in one point three percent of cases with Standard Deviation of half percent. I don't know exact percentage. Need to look more. PubMed service did not give many abstracts on PCOS + infection.

Anyway.

So how would it look alike?

A young woman comes to ER. She is premenopausal. She complains on mild (or maybe severe) pain in her belly. ER Doctor takes history. The woman also mentions changes in her menstrual interval. Let's say regular is 28 days. Last one was delayed.

Physician puts gloves, puts jelly on gloves. Then he puts his two fingers into the female vagina.
The other hand is on belly. Then he starts to palpate.

It is named pelvic exam. Modest name. Though in Russia it is named vaginal exam, which it is.

Is it a common type of exam? Depends. They usually send you to CT (computer tomography) scan if there is severe abdominal pain. Charge 1000. Boom.
Done.

Exclude the price. Exclude delay in reading (somebody should look and interpret what is going on). Exclude radiation. CT scan gives better picture than just poking your belly.

CT scan helps to diagnose abdominal pain of uncertain origin. You can really image what is going on. Though, there are cases when physical exam gives more clues. Physical exam must be performed always. Pelvic exam is somewhat a special one.

I remember how I performed a pelvic exam in medical school. It is actually difficult even just to insert two fingers into vagina first time.
Female Gynecologist asks me: "So, what do you feel?"
Patient goes the same, encourages me:
"What do you feel, what do you feel, do you feel it?"

I guess she felt a sort of museum artifact.
Heck, I did not feel anything.

Well. Actually I felt something - aside from uterus - something round. I would say 5 cm in diameter (would it be less I probably would not feel it at all) and semi-solid on touch. Also I saw that the patient grimaces. It is tender when I push hard.

It's it. How to say that it was tuboovarian abscess (that it was) for sure, I dont know.
You really need experience to perform this type of exam. Experienced gynecologist can tell almost precisely what is going on.

Let's discuss that woman in ER. She will have tenderness on one side. Physician should be able to feel a mobile cystic mass.
(Cyst or rather cystis is Latin for bubble. Palpate is Latin for touch. It means you touch something and feel what it is).
What if the pain is severe? It often means that the cyst ruptured.
My impression is that modern ER orders CT scan right away. If you are not very sure what is going on, you will go from less expensive methods to more expensive and end up with CT anyway. Ruptured cyst causes significant pain. Here CT is indicated.

Alternatively they may order Ultrasound Exam. Transvaginal ultrasound uses the probe inserted into vagina. Ultrasound is cheaper than CT. Ultrasound visualizes cysts clearly. Though, ultrasound gives less information for excluding other pathology. Ultrasound is also safe from the radiation point of view.

In PCOS ultrasound shows increased number of small cysts in both ovaries. Usually more than five confirms the diagnosis.

Culdocentesis may give some useful information too. The name came from cul-de-sac. It's French I guess. Cul-de-sac is one of the pouches in the pelvis. Centesis means: stick a needle and draw. These days it is considered an outdated method. But if you do not have other machines, it is very useful.

If the content is blood, the ruptured cyst was probably Corpus luteum cyst. If the content is purulent the ruptured thing was probably a tubo-ovarian abscess or other pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
Other abnormal masses can rupture as well. Teratoma gives oily fluid, endometrioma gives "chocolate" old blood.

What is a follicle?

Female body is created for reproduction and childbearing. Oocyte is the start for a new human being in the ovaries. Several layers of specialized membranes surround an oocyte.

The membranes protect the oocyte, help in feeding and nurturing of this small cell.
One of layers has a beautiful name Zona pellucida. Pellucida means shiny in Latin.

When the oocyte matures, a small bubble (follicle) filled with special fluid is formed around.
In mid-cycle the follicle bursts and the oocyte goes first into peritoneal cavity, next into ovarian tubes (fallopian tubes). The tubes lead into uterus. Tubes, by the way, have special small hair-like things inside - fimbria. They beat in one direction. They propel the oocyte into uterus.

I remember I read somewhere that there are 11000 follicles. When a girl is born, there is no more multiplication of oocytes. After the birth the follicles sit dormant. When the female goes into her reproductive age, the follicles start to grow and mature (one by one).

Only 400 of them mature.

Yeah, it should be like this. Calculate. Average cycle is 28 days. So there are around 12 cycles a year. Women start to menstruate at 13-15 years old. The menopause is around 45-55 years. Total is 30-40 years

Multiply everything together. It should be around 400.

By the way, an interesting thought.

All those discussion about abortion and Stem Cell research.
Somewhere in nineteen century the baby was considered the baby when it was born. The church even struggled to admit anything like existence of cells etc. Rare baby actually survived beyond first year.
Heck, the hypothesis that human been consists of small cells was actually admitted widely not so long ago. Maybe hundred years ago. Then, all that research happened. People learned how the fetus is created and how it grows. Now the public idea is that fertilized oocyte is already the baby.

Have you seen any oocyte under microscope? Even a human hair near an oocyte looks like a skyscraper near a real human.

Now, if the public perception had shifted this way in several decades, shouldn't we punish all women for that they recklessly loose 400 potential babies during lifetime. Isn't it a crime?

Then, maybe we should punish every man for losing millions of sperms - also potential babies.
Where did this idea come from that fertilized oocyte is the baby and non-fertilized oocyte is not?
Shouldn't we move the boundary a little bit earlier?
Need to think about that.

Anyway.

Ovarian follicle (follicle means small bubble in Latin) usually mature, rupture and release the oocyte that was in this follicle. Sometime the rupture delays. Then ovulation delayes. (Ovulation is rupture and release of the oocyte. Oocyte is the cell that eventually becomes the fetus after sperm gives the genetic material).

Normal cycle is divided into follicular phase (when the follicle grows) and luteal phase.
Luteum means yellow in Latin.

When the follicle ruptures (by the way rupture means burst or tearing), the oocyte goes out.

The cavity that left behind (remember it was small bubble) is filled with blood and special cells, producing hormones. These special cells grow in quantity and fill that cavity. These cells produce hormones that help the fertilized oocyte to attach and to grow in the uterus. Because they grow in quantity, they create a yellowish body in the ovary. It is literally yellowish. The name is Corpus Luteum (corpus=body, luteum = yellow).

This is normal cycle.

As we said, the follicle sometime doesnt rupture (there is a bunch of reasons). A physician should sort out several different conditions. This is an abnormal cycle.
If follicle does not rupture it becomes the follicular cyst. Cyst also means bubble in Latin. There are actually plenty of different kinds of bubbles in medical Latin. Big ones and small ones. Normal and abnormal.

OK, the cyst did not rupture. Then what happens?

Well. If cyst doesn't rupture, it usually resolves. That fluid inside the cyst is reabsorbed and the cyst collapses.

However, if the cyst ruptures, it causes acute pain. The pain comes from irritation of peritoneum (lining of peritoneal cavity) with blood and cyst content.

Why it is not painful when a regular follicle ruptures and releases the oocyte? Probably, a regular follicle is too small. In addition it doesn't cause much bleeding.

In contrast the cyst is a really big bubble (sometime 5-10 cm in diameter). If it ruptures, it instantaneously release bunch of special fluid. Plus, there is significant bleeding because there are a lot of blood vessels around to feed.

Significant is of course relative.

For example, take 5-10-20 ml of blood from a patient vein in a hospital daily. He complains about the pain from the needle mostly.

But if you get the same 10 ml of blood into peritoneum... Wow.
You will cry. There are plenty of nerve endings. Peritoneum is too touchy-feely. Tender.

Besides, the cyst has high concentration of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins, in their turn, are mediators of inflammation. They should cause significant pain directly and indirectly.

From the other hand bleeding could be really significant. Then it becomes really dangerous.

A physician also should not miss an ectopic pregnancy. Doctor will order a pregnancy test for that. If an ectopic pregnancy starts to bleed, this is really really worrisome. It seems like your blood did not left your body. However the blood is in the abdominal cavity. It left the blood vessels. It is internal bleeding. You die quickly.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a little bit different animal actually. Here is some genetic predisposition.

Classically: an overweight young female presents with oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, anovulation, acne, hirsutism, and or infertility.

What is what? Poly = many. Many, many, many men.
So PCOS means bunch of those bubbles in the ovaries. The follicles did not rupture on time, as they should. Oligo means a little. Meno is derived from menses. Rrhea means flow in Latin

So olygomenorrhea = flowing a little bit (less than it should).
A- is a prefix that means "No". So, amenorrhea = no flow at all.
Hirsutism. I don't remember where it came from, but means hairy or hairiness. Actually excessive hairiness.

Causes of PCOD or PCOS (disease or syndrome) are obesity, genetic predisposition and some other causes of Luteinizing hormone (LH) excess.

There is a self-amplifying cycle:

LH stimulates theca lutein cells. Theca means sort of capsule. Doesn't really matter, just an anatomical term.
Those cells are special. They produce androstendione and testosterone. Androstendione and testosterone are actually male hormones. You know, bodybuilders use these hormones to get muscle bulk. You probably heard about those hormones. Sport doping uses testosterone.
So, athletes build their muscles and trash their liver.

Rumors say that a famous Hollywood actor used the hormones. Later he got liver transplant.
Though he always denied the use.

Anyway, female body converts androstendione into estrone (a weak estrogen). Fat cells do this. Estrone is a female hormone already.

Basically any body produces androgens (andros = man) and estrogens (female hormones). Just the proportion of those hormones makes us male or female.

The cycle happens in normal person as well.

The estrone stimulates pituitary secretion of LH.
Pituitary is a small gland in you brain. Pea Size.
It's small, but it sooooo powerful.

Pituitary has another name - hypophysis. Hypo means down, phys means growth, so this gland is growing from below the rest of the brain. Pituitary gets bunch of connections from hypothalamus.
Hypothalamus means below thalamus.
These two areas of brain regulate almost all the hormone production in organism.

Higher levels in brain hierarchy regulate them.

Hypophysis gets a command. Then it produces some intermediate messengers and hormones.
The hormones go into blood and control whole body.

Hormones are like orders, like messages to the rest of the body.

Brain may give quick orders: Signals go through the nerves. It is like a phone order or cablegram.

Brain also regulates organism through the hormones. This is like a mail order.
Sort of if the brain sends letters by regular mail. The hypophysis is the Post Office in this case.

PCOS kicks in when a woman is obese. There are more fat cells to convert
androstendione to estrone. Estrone has such effect that it stimulates pituitary secretion of LH.
LH in its turn goes back to those theca lutein cells we discussed and turns them on again, to produce more androstendione, which is again converted into estrone.

Self-amplifying cycle

In addition, that increased level of testosterone causes the hirsutism (she becomes hairy like a male) and acne in female.
In a normal person this cycle is probably designed to support the development of fetus.
Estrogen helps placenta to grow. Placenta supports fetal growth.

However, in a person with PCOD the cycle is going out of normal control. In this case LH causes growth of the cysts in the ovaries.

Why?

Because the corpus luteum cyst is partially made by overgrowth of those theca lutein cells. LH stimulates theca lutein cells.

Also, women with PCOS have intolerance to glucose (sugar) and resistance to insulin.
It means there is a lot of insulin (hormone that helps to utilize glucose mainly).

However excessive insulin does not work. Either receptors to insulin do not work or something else, but the glucose is not utilized. Hence, energy inside the cells drops. Hence, a big pile of other problems mounts. As if it is Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes is a different topic of discussion. For us, it is worthwhile to mention that people with diabetes are very much prone to any infection.

PCOS causes acanthosis nigricans also. Acantocytes are special skin cells.
Nigricans means black in Latin. That thing looks like thickened pigmented skin. When you touch it, it feels like velvet. Usually it happens in axilla, neck, below breast, in inner thigh and vulva. So, mostly all those places where skin folds.

The treatment for PCOS includes different medications: oral contraceptives, progesterone,
glucocorticoids, ketoconazole, spironolactone, cyproterone, flutamide, cimetidine, finasteride, ovarian wedge resection, laparascopic electoracutery, mechanical hair removal, etc.

All methods break the cycle of overproduction. The medications are either hormones themself or hormone-like substances that occupy receptor site and prevent regular hormone to work.

The medications act on different levels. Normal hormones have very complicated regulation. There are loops and feedbacks in the pathways.

To suppress a hormone production or action, you give similar hormone or another hormone or non-hormone at all, that goes to the feedback loop and breaks it and so on. It's really long separate discussion.

Basically, you either decrease hormone production or shift ratio toward female hormones.

Another way, the best probably, is weight loss. No fat cells - no conversion of andrgoens etc You can make conclusions yourself.
It's the first line of treatment.

For a simple follicular ovarian cyst (not PCOS) doctor rules out ectopic pregnancy. Then he may send patient home and repeat pelvic exam in 6-8 weeks. Especially, if the cyst was small, less than five cm in diameter.

For larger cysts, doctor would order pelvic ultrasound.

Most follicular cyst will resolve on their own in six to eight weeks. Though, a physician may give oral contraceptives. Again, this suppresses stimulation of cyst by hormones from the hypophysis. The hormones are named gonadotropins.

If the cyst is still there after 6-8 weeks, a suspicion arises that the cyst maybe malignant. Then doctor orders other studies. CT scan. Physician may perform surgical procedures also. He looks what is this cyst really.

Corpus luteum cyst is usually not treated. However, oral contraceptives may be used.

Rupture of any kind of those cysts leads to another story. Acute pain, bleeding into peritoneum.
Sometime bleeding is very severe and is true emergency. You need also to distinguish other process in the abdomen. For example, appendicitis looks similar. You can treat mild case of non-complicated cyst rupture with just observation. Appendicitis almost always requires surgery.

There are many other problems arise. Surgeon scratches his head: what's going on? Is this this or is this that? Here is the CT scan gives big advantage.

Now, going back to the question of Ms. L.

If the cyst was infected, I don't' see a reason why a ruptured cyst wouldn't become infected.
Cyst content is very nutrient-rich. Remember? All those cells and their products are dedicated to feeding the oocyte (future baby). Should be very tasty for any bacteria.

Rupture may cause significant bleeding as well. This blood is also different from the blood in your vessels.

This blood is sitting in the pelvis, not moving, quickly clotting. Clotting prevents entry of white blood cells. "No flow" prevents entry of antibodies. Absence of flow prevents entry of other protective chemicals (complement etc).

So, it is very nutrient-rich media for bacteria growth.

They can go wild. Why not?
If a female had another pelvic infection before, that infection can flare up. In a normal person peritoneal cavity should be sterile. However, any gynecological or gastrointestinal infection may supply bacteria. Now, mix these bacteria with the content of the leaking cyst. It just destined to become infected.

Actually Ms. L later answered her own question in another e-mail. She had cysts multiple times and they became infected several times.

So, to answer the question:
Will the ruptured cyst become infected? Not necessarily. Rather not. Can it become infected?
Yes.
