The Music In Gossip Girl Episode 16 - "All About My Brother"

Starting from the beginning, as Georgina pretends to be Sarah and chats with Vanessa at her work the sounds of Good To Be Alive by Joey Sykes fills the cafe. The song fades a little into the background but the tune can still be heard as Dan enters the cafe and meets the two girls. Music follows Georgina all the way to Serena's place where a new tune picks up as she joins the family for dinner. Say (All I Need) by One Republic breaks in and out of the dinner conversation; a conversation where Georgina ends up outing Eric to his entire family.

As Lily prepares for her wedding the perfect clips from Gossip Girl regulars The Kills, and classical music set the mood. While Lily is out and about Cheap and Cheerful by The Kills leads up to the moment that she runs into Rufus. As the two engage in a conversation over Jenny, Beethoven's, Sonata for Violin and Piano, No. 5 in F Major slowly starts to build up. The music gains in volume as Lily tries on her wedding dress and models it for Rufus, who obviously sees something he wants.

Jenny's party requires music and the two songs that we here during this time totally set up the party and the drama that goes down. While Jenny is chatting with her friends and lying about her relationship with Asher Shut Up & Let Me Go by The Ting Tings can be heard playing. Things change up a little when Eric and Blair crash the party to out Asher; Paralyzer by Finger Eleven says it all.

Finally, another selection by The Kills makes its way into another episode. When Serena is surprised to meet Dan's new friend, 'Sarah', U.R. A. Fever by The Kills plays. Later when Serena is confessing to Blair on the stairs the same song comes on again.

Music Business Contacts: Music Business Registry connects artists, managers, publishers, producers &

"The difference between success and failure is information," notes Ritch Esra, and he should know. Along with his partner, Stephen Trumbull, Esra is a leading part of the number one most-reliable source of information on "who's who" and "who does what" in the music business. Best of all, they can tell you where everybody is located.

FIVE VOLUMES OF DATA.

The Music Business Registry (http://www.musicregistry.com) publishes five directories: the "A&R Registry," the "Music Publisher Registry," the "Music Business Attorney Registry" the "Film and Television Music Guide," and the "Record Producer and Recording Engineer Directory." For many in the business, these are indispensable reference works.

"The directories give everyone vital, accurate and the most up-to-date information they need to contact the entire A&R, music publishing, legal and film/TV music communities," Esra states. From comparing notes with dozens of professionals in all of these areas of expertise, I can tell you that no one disputes his claim.

More than one music industry executive has told me that the Music Business Registry publications are worth their weight in platinum. Tess Taylor, president of NARIP (National Association of Record Industry Professionals), says "I couldn't get through one day without the directories from the Music Business Registry. These publications are the finest in the business."

Each directory tells you how to reach industry professionals by regular mail, e-mail, direct dial telephone and fax. The books provide each person's exact title, street address, the name of their assistant and the styles of music in which each executive specializes. Web sites are also included.

UPDATES? YOU WANT UPDATES?

The world of the A&R executive is exciting but ever-changing. Which is to say, there's a lot of turnover in this part of the industry. So much turnover, in fact, that the A&R Registry is completely updated and reprinted every eight weeks, whereas the publisher volume is biannual and the other books come out yearly.

NEED A PRODUCER? HERE ARE 1,700 OF THEM!

Created in partnership with RPM Direct, the "Record Producer & Recording Engineer Directory" presents 1,700 of today's leading Record Producers, Recording Engineers & Remixers throughout the US, Canada and Europe in every genre of music. Included in the book are:

(1) Complete contact information for every Producer, Remixer & Recording Engineer along with a list of their credits.

(2) Producer/Engineer/Remixer Management Companies including a complete
staff listing as well as full client rosters.

(3) A Complete Index to easily locate any producer.

(4) Several Interviews and articles with today's leading Producers & Engineers.

No wonder you can find the Music Business Registry's publications in the offices of top record company executives, music publishers, artist managers, agents, music attorneys, recording artists, studios and other music business professionals everywhere from Los Angeles to London, New York to Nashville, Chicago to Copenhagen, Toronto to Tokyo, Stockholm to Sydney and Minneapolis to Munich.

YOUR SEARCH BEGINS HERE.

Timing - How To Dance Cha-Cha

Cha-Cha music is 4/4 time, and also has 4 steps to a bar of music. The last bar screams for you to step to the left and close your feet so this step has the characteristics of moving the foot to the side and closing the feet, which in turn produces the "cha-cha" sound, which is the name of the dance.

If you are having trouble understanding the basic movement of Cha-Cha which is usually said to be slow, slow, quick-quick, slow, then rephrasing it to "rock, rock, side-close, side", makes it far easier to grasp.

Most Latino dances consist of moving your step on the second beat and change the weight from one lef to the other between beats, but in cha cha your feel always move only on the first, second and fourth beats of the music. This little switch of weight makes the look and feel of the dance occur on the first and second beats, then on the third and halway through the fourth and first beat.

Count from the second beat of music to make it simple. Count "Two-Three, Cha-Cha, One" - if you know the basic movements you'll soon see this becoming meaningful.

There are more than one part to timing, TWO. There is a static metronome beat that flows though the entire track, which in turn dictates when it's time to move your feet. Another one is the actual tempo of the song. The tempo is what makes you take a certain step, pause for a period of time or how fast you should spin and turn. Understanding this will make you a preferable cha cha dancer.

You can't mistake a Cha Cha beat in a song. You hear the two slow beats and the three quicker beats. Then when you hear the quick beats you move side and close, cha cha cha.

Create a Star Wars Birthday Party

Little boys always love a Star War birthday party. Running around and fighting with their lightsabers is all they need to enjoy themselves but you can also devise games and decorate your party to make it really special.

With some tin foil and card you can create a whole galaxy for their imaginations to run wild in and you could create a party your little boys friends will never forget.

Take a look at these ideas

Party Essentials

If you are throwing a party there are a few essentials you always need like plates, cups, goody bags, napkins, invitations and balloons. You can of course pick these up from most supermarkets but if you want to make your Star War party one to remember why not use themed essentials.

You can pick up all your Star War essentials plus streamers, ribbons, table clothes and cutlery all in the Star War theme

Dressing Up

There are loads of star war birthday party costumes your little boy or girl could dress up in from Darth Vader to, Princess Leia, Anakin and Yoda. Dressing up is one of the most fun parts of a Star War Party. You could ask everyone to dress as someone different because there are so many good characters.

Games

Good verses Evil

You could devise a competition for your Star War birthday party between good and evil comprising questions and activities.

Split your guests into two groups (those dressed as goodies and those dressed as baddies). You can have several rounds to this competition as follows:

Question Round

You ask questions and the first team to shout out the correct answer gets a point. You could ask star wars trivia or space questions like what is the nearest planet to the sun? to keep the game in theme with your party

Group Round

This is a little like a treasure hunt. First of all cut out ten pictures of Star Wars characters (goodies not baddies) and stick them onto circles of card. These can be different sizes but should be no smaller than the circumference of a mug. Place these around your garden or house in view but not in obvious places.

Explain to your guests that ten members of the Alliance (Star Wars Goodies) have gone missing. The goodies need to find them before they are captured by the baddies. The two groups must go out and find as many of the missing as they can and they get one point for each one they bring back.

Fight to the Death

This round is the same as musical bumps but you explain that it is a fight, good against evil and the last man standing gets 10 points for his or her team.

Your guests dance around and when the music stops they must sit down as quickly as they can. The last person to sit down is out of the game. The winner gets ten points and their team wins the competition.

The Song is You

The words to this old standard suddenly invaded my dreams the other night and I awoke with a new revelation.

Although it was written as a romantic love song, the last 2 lines seemed to speak to me of something else...something genuine, authentic, and true...kinda like the way I want you to sing. The words to the last lines are,

"The music is sweet, the words are true, the song is you"

When I talk to you about being real when you sing, I am talking about choosing songs that are comfortable to you in style and mood, as well as lyrics and melody. When you choose comfortable songs that say what you want to say, AND are based on your beliefs your traditions, your customs, your upbringing and environment, then you ARE the song, and the song is YOU!

Finding Your Song

I grew up in New York City and was influenced by Jazz and Broadway musical styles. Jazz songs feel very natural for me...the way jazz notes are bent and improvised feels familiar and comfortable, and when I sing Broadway songs, they flow from me with an effortlessness that feels as if I could go on singing for hours and hours.

Oh sure! I'll sing a Country tune when asked, or power-ballad, or a rock tune, or even an Art Song if requested, but although I can appreciate and perform all musical genres, if I were to choose an audition song to fully express my essence, it would have to be a Jazz tune or something from Broadway. And the reason for this is that as early as I can recall, the sounds of the melodies, harmonies and rhythms contained within these 2 styles drifted through our house non-stop.

You must examine your roots to find music that fully expresses you!

I have students who love the Jazz Style, yet find it difficult to negotiate through jazz syncopated nuances that are just not part of their comfort zones. These students sound much better, freer, looser, more confident when they sing in styles that they can FEEL and that are natural to them. It's where they can best express their own essence.

The Singer's Comfort Zone

Now I can hear you saying,

"WAIT, Chrys! Are you saying that we should never venture out of our comfort zone?

How can we ever grow if we don't?"

That's a good question! And "No", I'm not saying don't widen the border lines of your comfort zone. On the contrary, we should always be willing to stretch ourselves through our performances.

  • If we're used to clutching the microphone, we should try sometimes to sing with the mic in the stand and our hands free.
  • And we should try to stretch our range
  • and to listen to music that is popular and "happening", but may not be what we would normally purchase at Tower Records.

But everyone has a center where the music of the heart lives and breathes. In this place is where the Song and the Singer are ONE.

If you filled out the SingYourLife.com questionnaire a few months ago, you remember when I asked you what music you listen to. I asked that to get an idea of what songs best express your essence, cause that's where those songs are, in your CD and MP3 collections...and where we begin to discover the voice inside you...and the songs that are YOU!

The Current "American Idol" Season

Did you follow this last season of "American Idol"? Then you've already heard some of the judges' comments when they reject a pleasant enough sounding voice that just didn't touch them.

Let me echo what they said about a nice voice not being enough, especially when the song is not reflective of who the singer truly is in his/her soul. In this competition, SONG CHOICE seems to be the number one factor in whether or not one moves on or goes home.

When Simon says, "That was forgettable", he is saying that the song and the singer weren't ONE.
He is saying that the there was something disingenuous about the performance, maybe the song was chosen to impress rather then to express.

Even a singer with a dynamite voice can ruin his/her chances at an audition by choosing material that simply is not in harmony with his/her essence.

This is one of the reasons that I always discourage copying another singer's style. Whenever I hear, "Make me sound like Christina", I have to respond by telling the student that it's just not my thing to make carbon copies of other performers.

My mission is to help singers find their OWN voice and then to develop it to be the very best it can be, and to realize that it will be much more than good enough!

So I guess, I am saying 2 things here:

First- Be Yourself and let your song choices reflect that, and

Second - Stretch Yourself musically, technically, harmonically, and rhythmically to get more flexibility and vocal strength, and then use your improved vocal ability to express your inner soul.

When you do that, the Song is You, AND You are The Song!

That's when the Magic happens, singers!

Music Review of YogaMotion - White Swan Yoga Masters Volume 4

Lauren Peterson, another nationally recognized yoga practitioner and teacher, meticulously crafted Yoga Motion: White Swan Yoga Masters Vol. 4, as a sacred blend of male and female energies. Lauren is one of the few advanced (Fourth Series) ashtanga yoga practitioners in the United States. She has been featured in many magazines including Yoga Journal, as well as on television in the PBS series Healing Quest. If you're familiar with Dance Wave or Sweat Your Prayers events, you will readily appreciate the fabulous selection of music Lauren made for Yoga Motion. Starting with the slow, sensuous "Invocation to Water" by Shaman's Dream, by the third track, "Partner World" by Mass Ensemble, you'll be dancing like there's no tomorrow.

Of course, you may choose to do yoga or other forms of movement instead of dance with this incendiary collection of songs, but dance is my thing. "Napas," the next track, by Mercan Dede, continues the intense, even outrageous world beat groove. But then, a few tracks later, Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach slow things down a bit with "Mahadeva." Before this exquisite CD concludes, we're treated to Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas doing "Habibi" and Deva Premal singing "Guru Rinpoche Mantra" as only she can. In short, Yoga Motion: White Swan Yoga Masters Vol. 4 takes the listener on a most extraordinary journey. With over 77 minutes of music, by the time you're finished moving your body to this delicious selection of tracks, you'll be ready for a break.

As is often the case with great compilations, one of the joys of Yoga Motion is the opportunity to get to know some terrific artists who you might not otherwise get to hear. I urge you to spend some time soon with the exotic, over-the-top joy of Yoga Motion: White Swan Yoga Masters Vol. 4.

A Website Without Video Is Like

Jell-O Without Whip Cream

Do you like Jell-O? It's okay I guess; I mean it's not a hot fudge sundae is it? But if you add a little whip cream, then my friend you've got something worth calling dessert. My question to you is, does your website have that something extra, that dollop of whip cream on top that says, "oh mama let me at it," or does it just lie there squirming in your dish with the sound of Peggy Lee's voice ringing in your ears, "is that all there is?"

If your website disappointments, you need something that provides the 'eureka factor' and that can be provided with a creative, informative Web-video.

The Chicago Bulls Without Michael Jordan

How the mighty have fallen, at least in terms of brand personality. I mean it's not like the Chicago Bulls stink? It's just that without MJ they're not the Chicago Bulls of old. When Michael played we all watched, he was magic, he wasn't just a great basketball player, he was a great personality and he gave the team it's character; no Michael, no personality.

Is your website like the new Chicago Bulls, a talented group of players with skills but no singular personality? Time for a humanity injection, add a Web-video featuring a signature character host who can generate some excitement and establish your unique business personality.

Television Without Sound

You're watching your favorite television show, say CSI, the Vegas one not Miami, and the phone rings. It's your mother. You turn the television's sound down so you can hear her but you're still watching the show. You love your Mom but Grissom has just discovered a new miniature killer clue and you need to know what is going on, but your Mom is carrying on about how your Dad needs new dentures or something Frustrating. No audio, no information.

Does your website have the same effect as watching television without the sound. It's there, people visit, but they leave without getting your message. Time to add a little life to your presentation in the form of a Web-video that tells your story out loud.

Words Without Meaning

Have you ever reread someone's website copy several times and still not understood what the heck they're trying to tell you, or maybe you understand every word but still can't figure out what they're selling?

Words have meaning, they are meant to convey a message not hide it. A lousy video script is no better than lousy print copy. Your Web-audience has no patience for mumbo-jumbo that masquerades as information or for text and dialog that says nothing in as many words as possible in an effort to attract the search engines. Words have meaning, say them with style and deliver them with conviction.

The Rumba Without Rhythm

Have you ever sat at a wedding and watched people dance? There are the people who know how to move, how to respond to the their partners and to communicate with the slightest of gestures or movements. And then there are the others who look like they've got something icky stuck to the bottom of their shoes and are trying desperately to remove it.

If you want to communicate to your audience, you have to use all the techniques available. Communication is more than just copy, its voice, gesture, movement and meaningful dialog.

Romance Without Kisses

Ah the first kiss, something special that can seal a relationship or sour it forever. Your landing page is like that first embrace. Is yours as exciting as it could be, or is it like the guy who spends the entire first date talking about his double entry booking keeping skills?

A well-crafted, expertly presented marketing message is like a seduction; if you're not generating any excitement don't expect to produce any sales either. Boring mission statement gobbledygook and keyword-laden palaver are not the same as an enticing video. An engaging business story, well told, is like a juicy wet-one planted right on your audience's lips.

A Joke Without A Punch Line

Everybody likes a funny story. A good joke is nothing more than a short story with a set-up, an escalation, and a twist, but the real key to a good story lies in the telling. Even comedians with second-rate material can get their audience's howling if they know how to deliver their material.

It's all well and good to repeat the mantra, "websites are about content," but if that content isn't delivered with some style and panache, don't expect anybody to pay much attention.

A Song Without A Hook

Hit songs are highly structured stories with verses that function as chapters or acts, and a chorus that provides the hook that sticks in your audience's heads. Add a toe tapping beat and some instrumental flourishes and you've got something that people will listen to over and over again.

Does that sound like your website presentation? Are people willing to come back to your site just to watch your presentation, or does your website leave visitors with a 'been there, done that' impression?

Information Without Knowledge

Just because you're in business doesn't mean you've got to be boring. And just because you dump a lot of facts and figures and bulleted points onto your Web-pages doesn't mean you're making a convincing argument for anyone to buy your stuff.

Web audiences demand more. If you won't give it to them, you can be sure someone else will, like maybe your competition.

Interactivity Without Purpose

Can we all just stop and take a breath and think about this whole interactivity thing. Let's all get interactive, why? I mean what is interactivity anyway? Is it developing a hugely expensive game that people can play on your website to avoid working, or is it getting them to click on the "Tell Me More" button?

I vote for the interactivity that leads to opening a dialogue with a potential client, one that gets visitors to pick up the phone and call you to discuss their needs, not the one that generates a "Game Over" message. Of course that assumes you're willing to actually talk to customers.

Frequency Without Resonance

I happened to like vinegar on my fries, okay it's weird I admit it, but the Dutch like mayonnaise on theirs, even weirder. I once had a chef in a Tucson restaurant come out of the kitchen and confront me when I asked the waiter for vinegar (it's a Canadian thing). The chef approached the table and asked who ordered the vinegar? I reluctantly raised my hand. "You must be from Canada," he said, "I'm from Victoria, where you from?"

Good advertising is all about delivering a message that resonates with your audience. It doesn't matter how many times you run an advertisement if that advertisement doesn't make an impression on your audience. You can't be afraid to be creative or even a bit weird.

Humor Without Laughter

Dr. Max Sutherland in his e-mail newsletter report, "False Alarm Theory: How Humorous Ads Work" describes how laughter is a hardwired residual mechanism that developed in our ape days as an 'all clear' signal once a danger had past. The 'all clear' message is passed on from one ape to another, until the entire troop is screeching with the ecstasy of survival.

A guy slips on a banana and breaks his neck - that's not funny. A guy slips on a banana, jumps up and looks around to see if anybody saw - that's funny. Humor is based on creating some sense of uncertainty or tension that is ultimately relieved with a humorous punch line or comforting resolution. The safe or amusing resolution creates a chain reaction in the audience that signals, "hay guys, all is well; everything is back to normal."

Without tension there can be no relief, no opportunity for an entertaining resolution that creates a cascading viral reaction among your audience. So don't expect your website to be passed on to friends and colleagues unless you deliver a compelling presentation that offers the opportunity to signal the rest of the world that all is well.
